As part of our “My Body, My Choice” programme, our learners at Sunrise ECD and Jubelland recently explored the vital connection between what we eat and how we grow.

The lesson was a vibrant, sensory experience! The children took turns spinning a colourful wheel, enjoying different fruits based on the colour they landed on, while discovering how nutrient-rich foods help their bodies grow strong and healthy. The session also included interactive games that reinforced the power of making healthy everyday choices.

By combining play, laughter, and colour, we are helping our little ones understand a fundamental truth of Embodied Agency: taking care of our bodies starts with the small, positive choices we make every day.

Our Mini i-MED Kids recently took a creative dive into the wonderful world of feelings!

Through a playful, hands-on activity, the children constructed "emotion-changing faces." By simply sliding a ruler, they could watch the facial expressions transform from happy to sad and back again. This tactile experience helped our youngest learners visualize a powerful truth: emotions are dynamic. They can change, and it is perfectly okay to feel different things at different times.

By introducing these concepts through play, we are helping our "mini kids" build the confidence to recognize their feelings and express themselves clearly from an early age.

The Science of Calm: Exploring Anger at Mispah School

At Mispah School for Special Needs Learners, we recently explored a powerful topic: anger and how it moves through our bodies.

To make this internal experience visible, the children created "Anger Balloons" filled with vinegar and baking soda. When the materials reacted, the balloons rapidly expanded - providing a perfect metaphor for how anger can "bubble up" and grow inside us.

We used this hands-on experiment to discuss the physical sensations of anger - where we feel it in our bodies and how to notice it before it "bursts." Through this activity, learners explored a vital lesson in Embodied Agency: while anger is a natural emotion, noticing it early and finding safe ways to release it helps us feel calmer and more in control.

The Game of Life: Learning Resilience Through UNO

At Kids Club, we recently continued our exploration of emotions through a spirited game of UNO. For many of the children, it was their first time playing, and the energy was electric!

As the game unfolded, a full spectrum of emotions came to life - from the frustration of a "Draw Four" card to the excitement of a calculated win, with plenty of laughter and joy in between.

This provided a perfect, real-time opportunity to discuss how emotions show up in everyday situations. We explored how to recognize and manage these feelings while interacting with others, proving that play is one of the most effective ways to practice resilience. Through this experience, the children learned that while we can’t always control the cards we’re dealt, we can control how we react to them.

The Art of Healing: Mapping Emotions in Blompark

Participants in our Ikamva Community-Based Treatment programme recently came together for a powerful mental health and coping skills session centered on the physical reality of our emotions.

Using watercolours, each person created a body map to illustrate where they experience different feelings - the tightness of anxiety in the chest, the warmth of love in the heart, or the heaviness of a burden in the shoulders.

The results were more than just art; they provided a window into lived experience and offered a courageous invitation to be truly seen. Recognizing how emotions manifest physically is a quiet but transformative skill. When we understand exactly what we are feeling and where it lives within us, we take the first vital step toward healing and self-regulation.

Navigating Emotions at Mispah School

Participants in our Navigating Emotions programme recently took a colourful dive into the world of feelings. The children explored the core of emotional intelligence: what emotions are, why we have them, and why every single one of them matters.

The highlight of the session was a hands-on, joyful activity where each child created their very own Emotion Wheel. This personal tool gives learners a practical, visual way to recognize and communicate how they feel.

For learners with special education needs, having accessible, visual methods to name and express emotions is more than just helpful - it is transformative. It builds confidence, supports effective communication, and opens doors to connections that might otherwise feel out of reach.

In our Urban Gardening programme, learners recently stepped into the role of plant detectives!

The children explored the essential anatomy of a plant - roots, stems, leaves, and more - before diving into a hands-on discovery activity. Hidden across their pages were various plant parts waiting to be "found." Once spotted, each learner carefully assembled the pieces to build their very own plant.

By turning a science lesson into a game of discovery, we help children connect deeply with the natural world and understand the foundation of how life grows.

We are thrilled to launch our brand-new programme, Mini i-MED africa Kids. Every second Thursday, we welcome Grade R learners for a journey of discovery and growth.

This specialized programme is designed to help our youngest members explore the world through three vital lenses:

The World of Plants: Understanding how nature grows and thrives.

Emotional Foundations: Learning about feelings and how to navigate them with confidence.

The Magic of Herbs: Discovering the sensory and practical wonders of the garden.

We are so excited to watch these young learners grow, play, and build their futures with us. Welcome to the family, Mini i-MED africa Kids!

Who Am I? Exploring Identity at i-MED africa

A vital part of our mission at i-MED africa is helping children explore a powerful question: Who am I?

In a recent activity, the children drew self-portraits and filled them with the things they love, the activities they enjoy, and their dreams for the future. It was a meaningful session that encouraged them to reflect on what makes them unique and who they are becoming.

Moments like these remind us how powerful it is when children are given the space to discover themselves and dream big. We are honored to provide a safe environment where their aspirations can take root and grow.

Our Kids Club members recently explored a vital connection: how our feelings show up not only in our minds, but in our bodies too.

Using body outlines, the children mapped out their emotions - coloring where they felt different sensations and practicing how to name those feelings with words. This simple but profound activity helps children build a critical life skill: noticing and understanding their internal world.

When children can identify their feelings early, they are better equipped to handle challenges, communicate effectively with others, and build the foundation for healthy relationships. We are so proud of the curiosity and self-awareness these young leaders are developing.

Some visits become a tradition… and Lisa's is one the children look forward to every year!

Lisa volunteers with us at i-MED africa annually, joining in with our programmes and pouring her time and heart into the children. Her return is always met with big smiles and barely-contained excitement - and it's a beautiful reminder of the lasting connections that grow when caring, familiar faces show up consistently.

Recently, we held a menstrual hygiene workshop with the Grade 5 girls at Masakhane Primary School.

The girls enjoyed an engaging session that included an informative video, a fun "Pass the Glitter" game demonstrating how easily germs can spread, and a practical demonstration on how to correctly use and dispose of a sanitary pad.

Alecia from BrightPath Social Services - an organisation volunteering with i-MED africa - wrapped up the morning beautifully with a story time, leaving the girls with a warm and thoughtful close to their day.

At the end of the workshop, each girl received a pack of sanitary pads, generously donated by the Grootbos Foundation.

A heartfelt thank you to BrightPath Social Services and the Grootbos Foundation for their support in making this workshop possible.
