As part of our “My Body, My Choice” programme, our learners recently explored the world of emotions through games, storytelling, and an enthusiastic session of playdough face-making.

Beneath the creativity and laughter was an essential lesson in Social-Emotional Learning: even when so much in life feels outside of their control, children always have choices in how they express their feelings, ask for help, and care for their minds and bodies. Watching them physically shape different expressions opened up honest, safe conversations about what emotions look like, reinforcing the vital message that all feelings are allowed to exist.

This interactive approach is a core part of building Embodied Agency - giving children the physical and emotional vocabulary to understand themselves and navigate the world with confidence.

As health challenges rise during the colder months, we are grateful to share simple, practical wellness support directly from our community garden.

A group of local women recently visited the centre to collect fresh herbs, learning how to prepare their own soothing, immune-boosting teas at home. In seasons when illnesses spread easily, having the knowledge and access to cultivate home-based remedies makes a difference in family well-being.

This is Horticultural Agency in action - empowering individuals with the tools and natural resources to actively care for their own health and support their families from the ground up.

As part of our “My Body, My Choice” programme, our learners recently dived into a practical lesson on oral health and proper tooth-brushing techniques.

To bring the lesson to life, Bongeka demonstrated the correct steps using a large tooth model, turning a daily routine into an engaging, interactive experience. The excitement grew as the children took turns practicing the techniques themselves, each using their own model to master the motions.

This hands-on session was more than just a hygiene lesson - it was a direct exercise in Embodied Agency. By learning exactly how to care for their smiles, our children gained the confidence and motivation to take active, independent ownership of their personal health every single day.

Our learners at Okkie Smuts recently participated in an engaging and essential lesson focused on personal boundaries.

The children first explored the concept through a dynamic game, after which we paused to reflect together. We used a relatable metaphor: just like a netball court has clear boundaries where a whistle blows and play stops when the ball goes out, we all have our own personal boundaries that keep us safe.

It was a meaningful discussion that helped the children understand the importance of identifying and respecting their own limits, as well as the limits of others. Through this blend of play and conversation, they were able to grasp a vital pillar of Embodied Agency -learning that their bodies and choices belong to them, and that respecting boundaries creates a safer space for everyone.

Our learners at Mispah School recently dived into an exciting, hands-on lesson all about the art of planting and plant care.

The children began by exploring the textures of healthy soil, discovering why it serves as the vital foundation for new life. From there, they learned about the essential elements - water, sunlight, and nutrients - that plants need to grow big and strong. There was a wonderful sense of curiosity and pride in the room as each child took active part in the planting process.

This interactive session was a beautiful exercise in Horticultural Agency, teaching our learners that through patience, care, and nurturing, they have the power to help something thrive. We look forward to watching both these plants and our learners flourish over time!

We recently held a meaningful session with the i-MED africa Kids Club, focused on a simple but powerful goal: getting to know one another better through play.

Each child created their own paper "chatterbox," filling it with a mix of thoughtful and playful questions. As they moved around the room, taking turns to "operate" their chatterboxes and respond to their peers, the space filled with laughter, curiosity, and connection.

While it was a lighthearted activity, it served a deeper purpose. By creating a safe space for children to open up and share their stories, we are actively strengthening the sense of trust and belonging that defines our Kids Club. This is Embodied Agency in practice - learning to navigate social worlds and build community, one conversation at a time.

Severe storms have swept across the Western Cape, and here in Gansbaai, the impact has been significant, with many areas without electricity since Monday.

In times like these, staying connected to loved ones and accessing information is vital. We are incredibly grateful that the i-MED africa centre has been able to serve as a reliable charging station for the community. Thanks to the backup power system provided by the PowerOneForOne Foundation, we’ve been able to keep phones charged and communication lines open for our neighbors.

This consistent support from PowerOneForOne ensures that even when the grid goes down, our community’s ability to navigate and adapt remains strong.

Stay safe, Gansbaai. We are stronger when we stand - and stay connected -together.

After a long, hot summer, the i-MED africa team has been hard at work integrating fresh compost into the soil in anticipation of the autumn rains.

Summer can be a grueling season for home gardeners, especially when reliable access to water is a challenge. Now is the vital window to restore the nutrients the soil has given over the past months. By working in harmony with the seasons and the natural rhythm of the Overstrand, we ensure that our gardens are ready to thrive when the rains arrive.

This cycle of replenishment is a key part of Horticultural Agency - understanding that caring for the earth today is the foundation for a resilient harvest tomorrow.

Our Kids Club recently received a wonderful donation of activity books from Ta**us Cape Kelp, adding a valuable new dimension to our daily routine.

Because many of our learners arrive at the center ahead of the programme start time, these engaging books have become the perfect "early bird" activity. Instead of just waiting for the session to begin, the children can now dive into puzzles and creative challenges as they settle in. This has created a calm, focused, and positive atmosphere right from the start of the afternoon.

It is inspiring to watch them stay curious and actively involved from the moment they walk through the door. We are grateful for support that helps us foster a structured and stimulating environment for every child.

Our Kids Club recently enjoyed an exciting Easter egg hunt designed to challenge both their minds and their teamwork. Instead of simply searching for treats, the children were tasked with finding hidden puzzle pieces scattered throughout the space.

Each piece formed part of a larger, collaborative puzzle. As the children worked together, stayed curious, and problem-solved, they revealed a giant, colourful Easter egg illustrating a variety of different emotions. This served as a beautiful, visual reminder that it is natural to feel many different things at once.

To celebrate their effort, enthusiasm, and successful collaboration, every participant was rewarded with their own Easter egg. We are so proud of how these young leaders practiced patience and partnership to achieve a common goal.

We recently spent time visiting several home gardens in Masakhane, and the progress we witnessed was truly encouraging.

Through our Garden Club, Unati has been supporting community members as they cultivate their own green spaces. It is inspiring to see these gardens now flourishing with a variety of vegetables and herbs - all cared for and maintained by the residents themselves.

These spaces are doing more than just producing food; they are providing nourishment, fostering a sense of pride, and creating a tangible sense of Embodied Agency. We are continually inspired by the power of community connection and the beauty of growing together.
