Yosh*tomo Nara rose to prominence in the mid-1990s, a star in a generation of avant-garde Japanese artists associated with the neo-Pop ā€˜Superflat’ movement. This book, made in close collaboration with Nara himself, explores more than three decades of his work - and is the first truly authoritative monograph on the artist in more than a decade. Written by art historian Yeewan Koon and featuring texts by Nara himself, it includes his most recent work in painting, drawing, sculpture, and ceramics.

Set in an unprepossessing neighbourhood on the eastern edge of Johannesburg’s sprawl, opposite an early-learning centre and a Seventh-Day Adventist Church, House Villa is something of an anachronism, architecturally ambitious yet small in scale… A blue Johannesburg City Heritage plaque set on the wall beside the front gate confirms the building’s status as a ā€˜distinctive house’. This distinction is twofold: it was the home of the Italian-born South African sculptor Edoardo Villa and is a prime example of the region’s mid-century modernism.
– Lucienne Bestall, House Villa, 2026

In the early spring of 2025, A4’s team was granted permission to document the Johannesburg home of sculptor Edoardo Villa by its current custodian, Lunetta Bartz. Designed by architect Ian McLennan, a friend of Villa’s, the house was completed in 1968.

For .capetown this year we produced a small run of cushions with artist

Thirteen years ago, Jared Ginsburg began experimenting with ways to enlarge and enliven his n**e drawings into works which could fill three-dimensional space. To maintain the solitude of his studio while working on a larger scale, he asked his now-wife Stephanie Anastasopoulos to teach him how to sew, exhibiting the first of his fleshy canvas limbs and torsos in a solo exhibition titled ā€˜Body Parts’ (2013).

Inspired by these soft sculptures, Ginsburg collaborates with A4 Store to present Pillowface (2026), a series of unique cushions embroidered with ten slight variations of the same face.

have produced a selection of postcards - love notes [for friends / lovers / enemies]

The selection is made up of 10 postcards - 5 by Ruby and 5 by Amber reflecting their own distinct style to image making. Combining photography and text, they each began visualising love from ā€˜saved’ moments. The ā€˜notes’ formed an instinct for the natural world. In decay, in rocks, in a rat, in debris. Floral entanglements. The sisterhood of a travelling crystal - ā€œbecause you deserve protectionā€. In the colour purple. In the colour red. An intimacy of seeing the world in an accumulation of small moments from the heart’s archive.
