LIBRARY HIGHLIGHT:

Santu Mofokeng: Stories

30 years of work split into 18 definitive “stories” that are sharply edited, simply presented and richly printed in an oversized format that recalls the golden age of picture magazines. The stories range in subject from the zealous expressiveness found in “Train Church” and “Pedi Dancers,” and Mofokeng’s complex, long-form depiction of late-twentieth-century indentured servitude in “Labor Tenancies,” to the contested spaces of “Robben Island,” “Trauma,” “Landscapes” and “Billboards.” The majority of the pictures appears here for the first time. Taken together, they reveal the achievement of a major artist of, and for, our times.

Palermo Unsung tells the story of singers, cantanti neomelodici, performing at the music festivals in the south of Italy and their frenzied public. It is a story of the common man, ragamuffin, culturally corrupt but human and paradoxically authentic.
A 20 minute DVD, assembling pictures by Mauro D’Agati and soundtrack by Domenico Sciajno, gives a sense of the vibrant acoustics and emotions of these popular festivals.

Modern Colour Vintage Prints by Joel Meyerowitz

The photographs included are selections primarily from the mid 1970’s, when Meyerowitz had already established himself as a pioneer of the genre. In 1976 Meyerowitz transitioned from shooting exclusively with a 35mm camera (from his earlier street photography days) to an 8 by 10 inch view camera. The switch compelled him to alter his attitude to photography, forcing him to take more time and a more deliberate approach in making each image. Through this transition Meyerowitz discovered a new facet of the medium—one to which he would ultimately commit and that would come to define his career. The initial results—Modern Color, Vintage Prints—enable the twenty-first century viewer to see how truly innovative and significant Meyerowitz’s dedication and contributions are to the medium.

Alex Webb, The Suffering of Light, 2011

From the Preface (excerpt):

“Over the years, my way of seeing in color, first emerging in the tropics, has evolved through various projects, leading me not only to other parts of Latin America and Africa but also to Florida and Istanbul. I have been consistently drawn to places of cultural and often political uncertainty, such as borders, islands, and the edges of societies, where cultures meet, sometimes clashing and sometimes fusing. Some of my projects have taken years to complete, others have been briefer, and many have overlapped. Sequenced more or less chronologically, this book reflects the often chaotic, sometimes mysterious process of creation, interweaving projects and obsessions, themes and passions, cultural tensions and offbeat moments into one continuous chronicle of the street, from 1979 to the present.”
