Blue light is right next to UV radiation on the electromagnetic spectrum, so many people are concerned that it might be harmful to our eyes in similar ways.

📱 The good news is that our screens don’t emit nearly as much blue light as the sun, and even though it’s close to the frequency of UV radiation, it isn’t UV radiation. While you might experience digital eye strain after too much screentime, there is no evidence to suggest that it will cause permanent damage to your eyesight. If eye strain is a problem for you, computer glasses or a screen filter could help, but so does following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, focus on something 20 feet away from the computer for 20 seconds

It’s important to take good care of our lenses so that we can get the maximum benefit from wearing them!

👓Tips for Glasses Care:

Even with protective coatings, glasses tend to gather dust and oil as we wear them, and they require regular cleaning. As tempting as it is to reach for the corner of your shirt, it’s better to use a microfiber or cotton cloth and some glasses cleaner.

If there’s no glasses cloth around, the edge of a cotton shirt is a passable substitute, but make sure never to use wood-based materials like napkins or tissues. Because they’re made of wood pulp, they can scratch the lenses very easily. Also avoid using chemical cleaners like ammonia or window cleaner, because they can dissolve the protective coatings on your lenses.

And when you aren’t wearing your glasses, the best way to store them is in their case. Don’t fall asleep with them on, or you might damage them in your sleep!

So you have just been fitted with your first pair of glasses. Even though clearer vision is a big win, adjusting to life with glasses can come with a few bumps along the way.

It’s completely normal for new glasses wearers to go through an adaptation phase. Your eyes and brain need a little time to get used to processing visual information differently. During this period, you might feel slightly dizzy or experience mild headaches.

Consistency is key to adjusting to your new eyewear. It may be tempting to keep taking them off when they feel unfamiliar or strange, but wearing your glasses as prescribed helps your eyes and brain adapt faster.

Glasses should fit snugly but not tightly. If they constantly slide down your nose, pinch behind your ears, or sit crooked, you’ll likely end up with discomfort or even headaches. Stop by your optometrist's practice for a quick adjustment if anything feels off. A proper fit not only feels better but also ensures your lenses are correctly aligned with your eyes.

There’s a learning curve to wearing glasses, and no question is too small. Whether you’re unsure how to clean them, worried about pressure on your nose, or curious about lens options, your optometrist is there to help.

Most people think that if they can see clearly, their eyes must be perfectly healthy.

Many eye diseases and disorders don’t impact visual sharpness in their early stages. That’s what makes them tricky to catch without a comprehensive eye exam.

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can cause permanent vision loss without noticeable symptoms until damage is advanced. Similarly, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy can progress silently while the central vision remains unaffected in the early stages. Even cataracts, which eventually cloud vision, often develop gradually and without pain or sudden changes.

Make your next eye exam a priority, your eyes will thank you for it.

Goats: Rectangular Pupils

If you’ve ever looked into a goat’s eyes, you might have noticed their pupils are horizontal and rectangular. This unique shape gives them a wide panoramic field of vision (over 300 degrees), helping them keep watch for predators. It also helps stabilise their view when grazing on uneven terrain, which is crucial for animals that spend a lot of time with their heads down.

Jumping Spiders: Tiny Predators with Big Eyes

Despite their small size, jumping spiders have excellent vision thanks to their large central eyes, which give them sharp focus and good color vision. They have eight eyes in total, positioned to provide nearly complete coverage of their surroundings. This keen eyesight is essential for their hunting style, which involves stalking and leaping onto prey.

Chameleons: Independent Operators

Chameleons are famous for their colour-changing skin, but their eyes are equally remarkable. They can rotate and focus each eye independently, giving them a full 360-degree view without moving their heads. When it’s time to hunt, both eyes lock in on a target for precise depth perception - a perfect combination of surveillance and accuracy.

Four-Eyed Fish: One Pair, Two Purposes

The four-eyed fish, or anableps, doesn’t actually have four eyes, but it sure looks like it. Each of its two eyes is divided into two sections by a horizontal band. The top half is adapted to see above the water, while the bottom half is specialised for underwater vision. This means the fish can watch for predators in the air and prey in the water at the same time.

From rectangular pupils to independently moving eyeballs, the diversity of eyes in nature shows just how adaptable vision can be.

😴 While we often think of sleep as simply a time for rest, it plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy vision, and conversely, our eye health can significantly impact the quality of our sleep.

😴 Throughout the day, our eyes work constantly, processing visual information, focusing on screens, and adjusting to different lighting conditions. This continuous activity puts significant strain on the delicate structures of the eye. When you sleep the eye muscles can fully relax.

😴Without adequate rest, you may experience eye strain, difficulty focusing, and even temporary vision disturbances.

😴 It's a two way street. Certain eye conditions like dry eye and glaucoma can cause discomfort that interferes with sleep.

😴 To maintain healthy eyes and quality sleep, establish a consistent sleep schedule of 7-9 hours per night. Practice the 20-20-20 rule during the day: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Limit screen time before bed, and consider using blue light filters on your devices. If you experience persistent eye discomfort or sleep problems, consult with an eye care professional.

Diabetes can significantly impact eye health, leading to a range of complications known as diabetic eye disease.

How Diabetes Affects Eye Health:

👁️‍🗨️High blood sugar levels: Damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye), leading to inflammation and leakage.

👁️‍🗨️Oxidative stress: Caused by high blood sugar, damages retinal cells and can lead to vision loss.

👁️‍🗨️Poor blood flow: Damaged blood vessels can restrict blood flow to the retina, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients.

Common Eye Complications of Diabetes:

👁️‍🗨️Diabetic retinopathy: The most common complication, characterised by abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina and leakage of fluid.

👁️‍🗨️Cataracts: Clouding of the eye's lens, which can cause blurred vision.

👁️‍🗨️Glaucoma: Increased pressure within the eye, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss.

👁️‍🗨️Macular edema: Swelling of the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision.

👁️‍🗨️Eye nerve damage: High blood sugar can damage the nerves that connect the eye to the brain, resulting in vision loss.

If you have diabetes, know the risks and be pro-active. Get regular eye exams to closely monitor your eye health.
