Antimicrobial Awareness Week is to increase awareness of AMR, which occurs when microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi become resistant to the medicines designed to kill them.
Viruses do not respond to antibiotics because they are biologically different from bacteria, and antibiotics are designed to target bacterial structures and functions.
Antibiotics work by killing bacteria or stopping their growth, but viruses have no cellular structure for antibiotics to attack. Therefore, taking antibiotics for viral infections like the common cold or flu is ineffective and can contribute to the dangerous problem of antibiotic resistance.
