Having cancer and dealing with treatment can be very hard, but it can also be a time to look at your life in new ways.

You can't change the fact that you have cancer. What you can change is how you live the rest of your life - making healthy choices and feeling as well as you can.

Supporting someone with head & neck cancer involves understanding the challenges they face, offering practical help, and providing emotional support, including listening, encouraging open communication, and helping them cope with potential physical and emotional changes.

HEAD & NECK CANCER AWERNESS CONTINUE

You will be glad when treatment is over. For years after you completed treatment, you will continue to have appointments with your oncologist or cancer doctor. It is called follow up appointments and it is important to go to these appointments.

Your oncologist will request follow up investigations, including blood tests and applicable scans. The goal of these ongoing appointments is to assess re possible disease recurrence.

These follow up appointments may be needed as often as every few months for the 1st year, every 3 to 6 months in the 2nd year post treatment and a little less often after that.

Your oncologist will ask you about any symptoms you're having. He will ask if you are smoking ci******es or using chewing to***co and he will do a physical exam.

Endoscopy exams, blood tests, dental exams or imaging tests like a MRI or CT Scan may be done to look for any signs of cancer recurrence or treatment related side effects. Your oncologist will tell you which tests should be done and how often based on the stage of your cancer and the type of treatment you had.

For more information with regard to treatment, a post treatment care plan or any related matters contact your oncology team at Cancercare Outeniqua Oncology on 044 884 0806 or at outeniqua@cancercare.co.za

When you have cancer, you might hear about other ways to treat the cancer or symptoms you might experience.

These might not always be standard medical treatment options. It may include vitamins, herbs, special diets and other things. You and your family might be desperate and curious about these treatment possibilities.

Some of them are known to help, but many of them have not been tested. Some of them have been shown not to help and in some cases has also been found to be harmful.

Please talk to your oncologist or extended oncology team about anything you have been introduced to or thinking about using, whether it's a vitamin, a diet, or anything else.

Make sure you make informed decisions and make sure your oncologist is aware of your decision.

You are our priority and we are here to support you.

Should you have any concerns please feel free to contact us at Cancercare Outeniqua Oncology on 044 8840806 or at outeniqua@cancercare.co.za

Oral, Throat & Neck Cancer Awareness Continue

When diagnosed you might need one or more type of treatment. The treatment plan best for the individual will depend on:

1. Where the cancer started to grow - the mouth or the middle
part of the throat right behind the mouth.

2. The stage of the cancer.

3. If the cancer is linked to a HPV infection.

4. The chance that a type of treatment will cure the cancer or help in some way.

5. The affect treatment could have on the way an individual is talking, breathing and eating.

6. Age

7. Other non- cancer related health problems the individual might have.

8. The individuals feelings about the treatment options and the side effects that come with it.

It is important to have an open mind when seeing your oncologist to discuss your specific diagnosis and the possible treatment options. This is needed to allow you to make an informed decision based on what is in line with your needs and expectations in terms of goals and quality of life.

We always suggest not attending for these appointments on your own. Bring a loved one or someone you feel comfortable with having with you to the consultation.

Our oncology social worker also offers a safe space post seeing your oncologist, to reflect, unpack and address any concerns or uncertainty you might still have.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to your or your loved ones oncology team at Cancercare Outeniqua Oncology, should you have any questions or concerns related to treatment decisions.
