COLON CANCER SCREENING & PREVENTION

Because it takes a long time for polyps to become cancer, regular screening is crucial to find and remove them before they turn into cancer.

WHEN TO START:
It is recommended to start screenings from the age of 45.

KEY TEST:
A colonoscopy is the most common procedure, which allows doctors to see and remove polyps.

OTHER TESTS:
Stool tests (like FIT or f***l occult blood tests) and virtual colonoscopies.

What is Colon Cancer?

The Basics:
A cancer that starts in the inner liner of the colon or re**um.

It usually begins as polyps, which are small clumps of cells that form in the colon. Not all polyps are cancerous, but some can turn into cancer over 10-15 years.

The term colon cancer combines cancer of the colon and the re**um.

If cancer has spread from the colon or re**um to other parts of the body (like the liver or lungs), it is called metastatic.

This March we will focus a little on Colon and Kidney Cancer Awareness.

We will also continue our "United by Unique" Story Sharing as part of World Cancer Awareness, by sharing Anton's story. Anton is a Multiple Myeloma and Kidney Cancer Survivor.

Colon Cancer, or colorectal cancer, is a disease that develops in the large intestine (colon) or the re**um. It is one of the most common cancers worldwide but is highly treatable if found early. It often begins as small , non-cancerous growths called polyps, which can turn into cancer over many years.

"United by Unique"

Lesley's Story.... (in ending)

"I've learned to talk about my experience, to normalize it. There's nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. Cancer touches everyone in some way, yet people are often to scared to talk about it. By opening up, I hope to encourage other to do the same. The chemo room is often a great place to strike up conversations. Each person's journey is different, but we can always learn something that might help us in our own journey.

Cancer does not choose who it is going to target. It does not see color, race or s*x. It touches lives indiscriminately and I am no exception. Instead of asking "Why me?" I have learned to ask, "Why not me?"

I've chosen to live by a Land Rover Motto: One LIfe, Live It! I take each day as it comes, putting one foot in front of the other. Even if my steps are small, I am moving forward. A reminder that even when Days are tough, my resilience is quiet defiance - A refusal to let cancer have the upper hand."

Thank you Lesley for sharing you story with us. Know that you have made a difference. You are appreciated and valued.

"What makes my journey softer?"

Lesley (Stage IV Breast Cancer Warrior):

United by Unique

"Exercise has also been a saving grace. It's not about pushing myself to extremes but finding joy in small moments- whether it's a bike ride, a hike or a walk in nature with our four dogs. These moments of movement bring clarity and give me a sense of control over my body and mind. The outdoors is my happy place and if animals are involved, well that is just the cherry on top.

My HOPE is simple: To make the most of every day I am given. Each morning that I can wake up, get dressed, and face the day feels like a small victory.

I find my HOPE in knowing that I am not defined by this disease. The connections I've made with others - be it family, friends, or even strangers - fuel my spirit and remind me that life is about more than just surviving; it's about LIVING.

Gratitude has become the cornerstone of my life. I am grateful for the small joys - a sunny day, a kind word or message, or the feeling of accomplishment after a walk or cycle outdoors.

It helps me see beauty even in the mist of hardship and keeps me moving forward, one step at a time. "

"What makes my journey softer and easier? "

Lesley's Story continue

"The love and support of those around me have been invaluable. My husband has been my rock through it all. He has stood by me every step of the way, taking me to every doctor's appointment, every chemo treatment, and providing unwavering emotional support. I cannot imagine this journey without him. My wonderful family has also been a pillar of strength, offering their love and encouragement when I've needed it most.

From my incredible oncology team to the understanding of my workplace, I have been blessed with people who uplift me. Talking to others who are also battling cancer - whether in the chemo room or through casual conversations - has provided unexpected comfort. Sharing stories reminds me I'm not alone and helps me find strength in others resilience."

Share your story.

"United by Unique"

Lesley's Story...

"Perhaps the hardest part is the unpredictability and the loss of control. Cancer forces you to adjust constantly, whether it's managing treatment side effects, battling exhaustion, or coming to terms with an uncertain future. It is like living with a death sentence over you. You have no idea when the cancer is going to up its game and strike back. How long do I have? No one can answer this question. However, does anyone know how much time they have on this planet?

The uncertainty can feel overwhelming at times. The days when I feel like I'm dragging myself through, and even small tasks feel monumental, are the most difficult."

"United by Unique"

Lesley's journey story continue...

"The emotional journey has been equally profound. I've had to confront my fears, dig deep to find hope, and embrace life in its rawest form. Adjusting to the reality that I can no longer do everything I once could has been humbling, but it's also a reminder to appreciate what I can still achieve.

One of the most difficult aspects has been ending my working days prematurely - a decision that felt like losing a part of my identity. Work gave me purpose, structure, and a sense of accomplishment, and letting that go has been a challenging adjustment. I finally achieved my wish of being a "kept woman".

Share your story as well... It inform and shift conversations. Make a difference.
