Imagine Seeing Clearly!

TESA (Trans Epithelial Surface Ablation, also known as Advanced Surface Ablation) is a modern, no-touch form of laser vision correction that builds on the principles of PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy).

This method is our preferred approach for suitable patients. Based on current research and clinical experience, our ophthalmologists find TESA offers predictable, stable, and effective results — with a favourable safety profile.

At Garden Route Eye Clinic, these procedures are performed in our dedicated Excimer Laser theatre at George Surgical Centre Private Day Hospital, using the Schwind Amaris 1050RS.

Glaucoma Awareness Week: Protect Your Vision

Glaucoma-related vision loss is irreversible, but treatment can slow or stop its progression.

Treatments to Reduce Eye Pressure

Medications:

✅️ Eye Drops: Improve fluid drainage or reduce fluid production.

✅️ Oral Medications: Used if eye drops aren’t enough.

Surgical Procedures:

✅️ Laser Surgery (Trabeculoplasty): Uses a laser to enhance fluid drainage.

✅️ Conventional surgery (filtering surgery): A procedure called a Trabeculectomy creates an opening or a drainage flap in the white part of the eye to help fluid drain from your eye more efficiently.

✅️ Drainage Implant: A small tube helps drain excess fluid.

Properly following your treatment plan is key to preserving vision. Regular eye exams are essential for monitoring and adjusting treatment as needed.

Glaucoma Awareness Week: Know the Facts, Protect your vision.

During the eye exam, you might be given eye drops to dilate (widen) your pupils, which gives the ophthalmologist a better view of your eyes.

There are several tests that an ophthalmologist might use to diagnose glaucoma:

✅ Visual acuity test: Assesses the smallest letter you can read on a standardised chart.
✅ Eye pressure test: Measures the pressure level in your eye.
✅ Visual field test: Checks for any ‘missing’ areas in your vision.
✅ Ophthalmoscopy: Examines the interior of the eye (using a special tool called an ophthalmoscope).
✅ Gonioscopy: Examines the area where the fluid should drain out of your eye, to check if there is a blockage.
✅ OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) Scan of the Optic nerve: Determines if your optic nerve has been damaged.

Early detection is key!

Glaucoma Awareness Week: Know the Facts, Protect your vision.

Some factors can make you more likely to develop glaucoma:

▶️ Your age - Your risk of getting glaucoma increases as you get older.
▶️ Genetics, family history and race - If someone in your immediate family has primary open-angle glaucoma, you have a higher risk of developing it too.
▶️ Medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and myopia.
▶️ Eye Injuries - Trauma to the eye (such as a sports injury) can cause internal damage and increase pressure inside the eye.
▶️ Lifestyle factors: Research has shown that there may be a link between higher glaucoma risk and certain lifestyle factors, like smoking.

It's Glaucoma Awareness Week! Know the Facts, Protect your vision.

Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that causes progressive damage to the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and blindness. It happens when the pressure inside your eye becomes too high. The increased pressure inside the eye kills nerve cells and damages your optic nerve, leading to vision loss. It is often called ‘the silent thief of sight’ because it often progresses without noticeable symptoms. Usually, the damage to the optic nerve is painless and takes place slowly and gradually.

Refractive surgery is a procedure that corrects near-sightedness, astigmatism and sometimes farsightedness. This can be done by implanting a lens into the eye or reshaping the cornea with a laser.

Early detection of eye problems can save your vision.

Early signs of eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration can go unnoticed.
Vision changes happen gradually, and you may not realise your eyesight is worsening.
Undiagnosed conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be detected through eye exams.
Children’s vision issues can affect learning and development if not diagnosed early.

Vision is precious and should not be taken for granted.

Your daily habits can make a big difference in keeping your eyes strong and healthy.

Sleep helps your eyes to stay lubricated and refreshed. Insufficient rest affects your eyes’ ability to adjust properly and tired eyes struggle to focus, leading to discomfort.

Vision is precious and should not be taken for granted!
