As we move into Autumn, it is time consider health matters and to be prepared for Winter. Annual influenza outbreaks are expected. Living in the Southern Hemisphere we take the experience of the preceeding winter in the Northern Hemisphere and extrapolate what could be our possible expectation for this winter. So here is what is to be expected:
1. Influenza started 4 weeks earlier than usual in Europe and the USA.
2. The first 8 weeks of the season experienced VERY high influenza activity.
3. The season did see the highest numbers of admissions to hospitals since the COVID-19 pandemic!
4. The main culprit was the dominant Influenza A (H3N2 ) virus.
5. RSV and COVID-19 as well as Influenza A (H1N1) were also detected.
In an attempt to remain healthy this winter, or to minimise illness we strongly advise vaccinating against Influenza this season.
Vaccines were released this week and these vaccines cover the Influenza A H3N2 as well as the Influenza A H1N1 strain ( the old 'Swine flu' strain).
The Flu Vaccine is recommended for :
1. All over the age of 65 yrs.
2. Patients with chronic conditions especially cardio/pulmonary disease.
3. Pregnant women on recommendation from your Obstetrician.
4. Children over the age of 6 months. Dose adjusted according to weight.
Please give this recommendation consideration as the suggestions are that we are heading into a possible tougher winter flu season than in years gone by.
