Children with learning disabilities can, and do succeed. By learning more about your child's difficulties and the way they prefer to learn, you can help them to achieve success at school and beyond.

Accommodations/concessions for Examinations

Accommodations or concessions for exams assist learners with special needs to fairly compete with their grade appropriate peers and to perform at their true scholastic potential.

Special needs are regarded as barriers to learning and performance such as specific learning disabilities (dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia), impaired vision, a hearing impairment, and physical barriers.

Exam accommodations/concessions that can be considered are additional time, a reader, the use of a computer/laptop, a scribe, a spelling accommodation, enlarged print, rest breaks and a separate venue.

The process to determine a learner’s suitability for specific accommodations or concessions involves a current assessment of cognitive and scholastic functioning and obtaining a holistic profile of the learner with regards to:

• Relevant background information pertaining to pregnancy, birth, and developmental, medical, and family history.

• Historical evidence of assessment and therapy to address a diagnosed learning disability eg. speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and remedial therapy.

• Scholastic history.

• A family history of learning difficulties.

Please contact Nigel Taylor, educational psychologist, for further queries about accommodations or concessions for exams.

"Here’s to the crazy ones.
The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers.

The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.

They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.

About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.

Because they change things.
They invent. They imagine.
They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire.
They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.

How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world,
are the ones who do."
