In light of World TB day on 24 February, we at HSU found this post long overdue. Tuberculosis (TB) is still one of the most common infections in South Africa — but it is curable and treatable. Early diagnosis and treatment not only saves lives — it also protects your family and community.

It’s important to remind our community that TB is spread through the air and can affect anyone regardless of socioeconomic status and HIV coinfection.

🔎 Symptoms of TB may include:
• A cough lasting longer than 2 weeks
• Night sweats
• Unexplained weight loss
• Fever
• Fatigue

❤️ There is no shame in testing. TB can affect anyone.

If you or someone you know has symptoms, please come in for assessment. Early testing makes all the difference.

MEET DR SHAUN MARTIN
Dr Shaun is a general practitioner with a special interest in geriatrics, mental health, substance abuse and surgery. He works at multiple old age homes in the area and splits his time between HSU and Hillcrest Medicross. He has his post-graduate diploma in anaesthesia and enjoys removing the weird and wonderful from patients' skin.

Not every illness needs the emergency room — but some symptoms should never be ignored. If you are unsure if you require immediate hospital care, rather call us and ask for advice and we can guide you.

Seek urgent medical care if you experience:
• Chest pain or pressure
• Sudden difficulty breathing
• Seizures
• Severe allergic reactions
• Sudden weakness or confusion
• High fever in infants not improving with medication and cool sponging
• Serious injuries or head trauma

When in doubt, rather get checked. Early treatment can save lives.

MEET DR TARYN FISHER
Dr Taryn is a general practitioner with a special interest in sedation, pain management and mental health. She is currently working on a post-graduate diploma in procedural sedation and runs the Keta-Mind ketamine infusions at Hillcrest Surgical Unit. If you are battling with refractory depression or chronic pain, you can chat to Dr Taryn about whether ketamine is an option for you.

STI & Condom Week 🩺❤️
Condoms are not only a contraceptive, but also a barrier protection against sexually transmitted infections, which are more common than many people realise — and many have no symptoms at all. Using condoms consistently and getting regular STI screenings are simple, powerful ways to protect your health and your partner’s. When in a new relationship, we encourage our patients to test for STIs together. This involves a simple blood and urine test that can test for chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis.

Prevention is care. Knowledge is power.

MEET DR NIRUSHA KASSEN
Dr Nirusha is a general practitioner with a special interest in Neurology and Geriatric medicine. She is exceptionally kind and patient and is well loved by the elderly community in the Upper Highway area. Dr Nirusha worked in neurology for many years in the public sector before taking some time to be with her children.

MEET DR SIMONE ZOEPKE
Dr Simone is a general practitioner with a special interest in woman's health, trauma and paediatrics. When she isn't sedating patients at the unit or seeing patients, she spends part of her week operating at Hillcrest Busamed with orthopaedic, plastic and neurosurgery surgeons. If you have any strange moles, need a routine pap smear and a chat about your hormones, or have had a bad day and need some patching up, give us a call and book with Dr Simone.
