In light of all that has been going on in our country regarding GBV, here are some things you can do to make a difference.

Yesterday, women around the country lay down in protest. South Africa experiences some of the world's highest levels of gender-based violence (GBV), with the rate at which women are killed five times higher than the global average, according to UN Women. It is said currently 15 women are murdered daily; a national disaster.

As healthcare providers, we stand with survivors and advocate for a safer, healthier society for all. If you know of someone being abused, reach out. It may save their life.

💜 What You Should Know

-GBV includes physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse.
- It can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, age, or background
- Many survivors suffer in silence due to fear, stigma, or lack of support
- Early intervention can save lives — your voice and support matter

💜 If you need help, you are not alone. Reach out to a trusted healthcare provider or local support service.

A little infographic on prostate cancer in light of Movember ☺️ Remember PSA blood tests are not enough and a physical examination or prostate ultrasound is required to fully screen for prostate cancer.

A friendly reminder to check your prostates, gentlemen. 🥸
November is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a vital time to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and support the men in our communities.

🔹 Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, but when detected early, it is highly treatable.
🔹 Many men do not experience symptoms in the early stages — which is why regular screening is essential.

Who Should Get Screened?
✔ Men 50 years and older
✔ Men 45 and older with risk factors (family history, African ancestry)
✔ Men experiencing symptoms such as difficulty urinating, pelvic discomfort, or blood in urine (seek medical advice immediately)

💙 Encourage the men in your life to talk to a healthcare provider
💙 Share this message to help spread awareness
💙 Support those affected by prostate cancer

Book an appointment with your GP or urologist to be screened with a PSA and examination. Let’s break the silence and make men’s health a priority. Early detection saves lives.

A little summary of how to check your breasts from Dr Simone Zoepke 🌸 "You're often told to make sure you examine your b***s at home, but you have no idea what that means. Here I explain the basics of the breast exam. It is never too early to start, and I find it best to check them 7 days after your period. Remember, hormones can make your b***s sore and lumpy."

For our next installment for breast cancer awareness month, we remind you of the warning signs to look out for when considering your breasts. Please make sure you familiarise yourself with your breasts so if something changes, you can recognise them. Our b***s are all different, so some inconsistencies like unequal sizes or ni**le inversion can be normal for you.

If you're unsure, please feel free to come in for one of our doctors to check your breasts for you and teach you how to examine them.

Dear Upper Highway 🌸 Happy Thursday.
In light of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we wish to encourage those who are walking the journey with this terrible disease, celebrate those who have managed to overcome it, and express our heartfelt sorrow for those who have lost a loved one to the battle. A special mention to our very own Sister Vanessa who showed unwavering strength, courage, and resilience in her journey to overcome breast cancer. Her positivity and determination inspire us all and serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection, support, and hope.

Please remember to go for your mammograms from 40 years of ago, or earlier if you have family members diagnosed with Breast Cancer already or you have a worrying lump of breast changes. Speak to your doctor if you need guidance checking your breasts.

Happy October, ladies of the upper highway 😊 As many of you may know, October is Breast Cancer awareness month and as such, we will be concentrating on breast care and cancer surveillance. If you've been putting off doing your mammogram and you're over 40 years of age, please use this message as motivation to get checked.
