After a total knee replacement, many patients are surprised at how soon physiotherapy begins, with the focus being specifically on bending and straightening the knee.

Early movement isn’t about pushing too hard or rushing recovery. It’s one of the most important factors influencing long-term comfort, mobility, and confidence after surgery.

In this article, we explain why the first few months after knee replacement are such a critical window for recovery, how early physiotherapy protects the rest of your body, and what patients can realistically expect along the way.

EARLY PHYSIO AFTER A KNEE REPLACEMENT...

After a total knee replacement (TKR), many patients are surprised by how quickly their physiotherapist encourages them to start bending and straightening the knee. This focus on early movement is not about rushing recovery; it is grounded in strong scientific evidence showing that early, structured physiotherapy is one of the most important factors influencing long-term outcomes.

Exercise is often recommended because it benefits both physical and mental health, yet many people feel discouraged by the idea of fitting it into busy lives or thinking they need a gym or special equipment. Movement doesn’t have to look like that.

Physiotherapists are movement specialists who assess how your body moves, understand pain or limitations, and help identify what might be holding you back. In our latest blog, we explore how physiotherapy can support you with realistic, personalised ways to move more, build confidence, manage pain, and make movement feel achievable and sustainable.

Make Movement a Priority in 2026

Exercise is often recommended by clinicians as a powerful tool for healing both the body and the mind. Regular movement can help reduce pain, improve overall function, support better sleep, manage weight, lower stress, and even enhance cognitive function, making daily life feel more manageable and resilient.

Exercise or healing movement is any activity that gets you moving and that you enjoy. From walking, dancing, and swimming to gardening, climbing stairs, or household chores, these activities can be done in short, achievable bursts throughout the day. When movement is enjoyable and realistic, it becomes sustainable and consistency is where true healing happens.

Clinicians often advocate for exercise because it is a powerful tool to help you feel better, both physically and mentally. Many patients, however, feel discouraged when they hear this advice. It’s not that they don’t understand the benefits; most people already know that exercise is good for th...

It's been such a joyful month and a half running the Paw Prints Rescue and Rehoming - NPC 2018/554039/08 PBO 930076636 dog collection campaign. The generosity of our patients, Candice Ambler-Smith's dance class, friends, family and the greater community has been overwhelming. They have dropped off dog food, cleaning equipment, dog treats, and grooming items and one client made a cash donation which will go toward Paw Prints' much needed expenses this festive season. Our collection ends next week as does our Google review campaign - review Debbie Cameron Physiotherapy and you will go into a lucky draw to win a R500 Woolworths voucher as well as a donation of dog food to Paw Prints on your behalf. Please drop off any donations at our Meyrickton Medical Centre practice on Monday or Tuesday next week. Your support will be greatly appreciated by all the furbabies Paw Prints looks after with the aim of rehoming.

Physiotherapy remains the cornerstone of conservative (non-surgical) management for cervical disc injuries. The goals are threefold: to reduce pain, restore movement, and rebuild confidence in everyday function.
1. Education and Lifestyle Modification
2. Manual Therapy
3. Exercise Therapy
4. Nerve and Mobility Exercises
5. Pain Management and Self-Management
Research suggests that 60–90% of individuals experience meaningful symptom relief through physiotherapy and exercise alone, although recovery may be slower if there is significant disc degeneration (Battié et al., 2019).
