Statement by The Journey Africa Foundation
On the Women for Change GBV & Femicide Shutdown – 21 November 2025
The Journey Africa Foundation extends its heartfelt congratulations to Women for Change and all partner organisations for successfully securing 21 November as a National Disaster Day in recognition of the ongoing Gender-Based Violence and Femicide crisis in South Africa. This achievement is not only historic, but a direct result of the relentless bravery, unity, and unwavering commitment of survivors, activists, and communities who refuse to be silenced.
As we observe the nationwide shutdown, The Journey Africa Foundation stands in full solidarity with the women, children, and families whose lives have been scarred by violence. Today is a powerful reminder that the fight against GBV & Femicide is not symbolic— it is a national emergency that demands urgent, coordinated, and sustained action.
We call on the people of South Africa, and on every institution—government, civil society, the private sector, and community structures—to move beyond statements of sympathy and adopt real, measurable interventions that protect lives. The recognition of 21 November as a National Disaster must mark not only a moment of acknowledgement, but the beginning of a profound shift in policy, accountability, and societal responsibility. Lip service must end; action must begin.
To the survivors leading this movement: your courage continues to shape the future of this country. To the families and communities standing with them: you carry the moral weight of this struggle with dignity and strength. And to government leaders: this shutdown signals a clear and urgent demand from the nation—do not fail the people again.
Let this day strengthen our collective resolve. Let it remind us that silence is complicity. And let it reaffirm that South Africa will never truly be free until every woman and child is safe.
The Journey Africa Foundation stands with you. Today, and every day.
