🌈 Here are some essential tips to protect infants and kids from harmful UV rays:
1. Dress for Success: Choose lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and wide-brimmed hats to shield their skin.
2. Sunscreen is a Must: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and remember to reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
3. Seek Shade: Encourage playtime in shaded areas, especially during peak sun hours between 10 AM and 4 PM.
4. Stay Hydrated: Keep them hydrated with plenty of water throughout the day to help their bodies cope with the heat.
5. Educate and Engage: Teach your kids about sun safety in a fun way, so they can take part in the protection measures themselves.

Let's make this summer enjoyable and safe for our children! 🌊☂️

CONTRACEPTION - Know your options.

Contraception is vital for the health, wellbeing, and empowerment of women globally. By allowing women to plan and space their pregnancies, they can manage the impact pregnancy has on their education and income. Planned pregnancies also prevent maternal deaths and improve maternal and child health.

Certain contraceptive methods also provide essential protection against some Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

There are 5 categories to choose from:

1. Short-acting contraception: oral (the pill), the patch, the vaginal ring
2. Medium-acting contraception: the injection
3. Long-acting, reversible contraception: IUD, subdermal implant
4. Barrier contraception: condoms
5. Permanent/irreversible: sterilisation

THE POWER OF PREVENTION

Why screening and vaccination are so important

The phrase ‘prevention is better than cure’ is repeated often – we all know it’s better to stop something bad from happening than it is to deal with it after it has happened. So why do so many of us delay seeing a doctor until we’re feeling unwell?

Preventative health is now a fundamental principle of modern healthcare around the world. Prevention is about helping people stay healthy, happy and independent for as long as possible. It’s also more cost-effective. Staying healthy is much cheaper than being unable to work or needing to constantly visit your healthcare professional due to unmanaged chronic illness. Focusing on preventative health benefits you – and the people around you who depend on you.

Preventive health is a big part of why the Bonitas Female Health Care Programme was launched – to give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to take full control of your health, and to make healthy choices as easy as possible.

Knowing the Mpox virus...

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is caused by the monkeypox virus. It is a disease similar to smallpox, although less severe. Prior to 2022, mpox was found in central and west Africa. This is because mpox is a zoonosis, a disease that is transmitted from animals to humans, and the animals that carry the virus tend to live near tropical rainforests, like different species of monkeys, rats, etc.

HOW IS MPOX SPREAD?
Mpox spreads from animals to humans when infected animals bite or scratch them, or during activities such as hunting, skinning, trapping, cooking, or eating the infected animals.
Mpox spreads from humans to humans mainly through close contact with someone already infected with the virus. Close contact includes:
- skin-to-skin (touching or s*x)
- mouth-to-mouth (kissing)
- mouth-to-skin contact
- face-to-face (talking or breathing close enough to one another to breathe in respiratory droplets)
- contaminated objects (like clothing and linen)
needles (tattoo parlours, or needlestick injuries in healthcare)

SCREEN TIME & YOUR CHILD

Sedentary behaviour by children has been identified as a risk factor in global mortality and has contributed to the rise in obesity. The WHO has warned that children should spend more time engaged in physical activity and getting enough sleep, or they risk developmental delays and learning difficulties. Too much screen time for babies and toddlers has also been shown to shorten attention spans and lower empathy.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS ADDICTED TO SCREENS?
Younger children express their addiction through temper tantrums when you switch off / take away their device. Older children tend to display the following behaviours:
- They feel uneasy or grumpy when they can’t use their device
- They spend hours on their device without taking any breaks
- They ignore other fun activities they used to enjoy, like going outside or reading a book
- They have trouble sleeping, or falling asleep, because their screen time is too close to their bedtime
- They complain of eye, lower back and neck strain
- They struggle with weight gain or obesity because they’re inactive
- They have difficulty with real-life, face-to-face social interactions

Topic: Cervical Cancer

Did you know that there is a vaccine that can protect your daughter from developing cervical cancer later in her life?
It’s important, because cervical cancer kills more South African adolescents and women aged 15 – 44 than any other cancer. It can be successfully treated if caught early enough, but it’s far better to prevent it in the first place! This month, we’re taking a closer look at how you can protect your daughter (and yourself) from cervical cancer.
