It was with much excitement that Kendrick House Home for theAged in Thornton opened their new East Wing Dementia Ward on Thursday 12th September. In attendance was the District Bishop of the MCSA Cape of Good Hope District, Rev Yvette Moses, who prayed a special blessing over the ward and the work that will be taking place there. Comprising 17 private single rooms and a Residents lounge and Dining room, the ward will enable the home to offer the necessary care to those suffering from Dementia in their twilight years. Kendrick House continues to remain true to its vision and mission statement to offer accommodation for the elderly in a Christian environment which is both affordable and secure and to be an integrated, caring home for the elderly and their families.

Today, 8th September marked "Bokke Friday" for Kendrick House. Arranged by catering Manager, Ian Lamont and his team. The residents and staff, after singing the National Anthem together, were treated to a braai consisting of chicken, wors with onion smoor, potato salad and the favourite 'braai broodjie' with desert, cupcakes (made by Charlotte Anderson) appropriately decorated and biltong. Residents had their lunch in the gardens and a good time of fellowship was had by all. Go Bokke Go!!!!

On Friday of last week the residents and staff were entertained by Piper James who came to share his experience of being one of the Royal Pipers for Queen Elizabeth. He played the bagpipes a the wedding of Lady Diana to Prince Charles, at Lady Diana's funeral, at various Royal events at Buckingham Palace and at the Coronation of King Charles 3rd. What wonderful stories he had to tell culminating in him playing "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes. After Ina related the story of 'the cloth' - the story of the Mighty Men Tartan' designed and patented by Pipey and Ina they presented Kendrick House with a book and a scarve made from the Mighty Men Tartan. What a wonderful privilege it was to have them amongst us for the morning!

After the visit of Piper James, Kendrick House was again privileged to receive a visit from Standard Pofil who brought Streetwise Two for all our residents and staff for lunch, 2 big cakes for desert, juice and gifts galore for the residents and staff. Thank you to all those who gave up their time and to Standard Profil for providing the resources to give all at Kendrick House such a special treat. Grateful thanks and deepest appreciation goes to all!!!.

Kendrick House celebrated 55 years of service to the Church and community by hosting a High Tea for all their residents (Main House and Life-rights) on Saturday morning, 19th August. Kendrick House opened it's doors on 16th August 1968 and those who attended heard how Mrs Ruca Cragg, a leading light in the Women's Auxiliary of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa recognised the need for a Home for the Elderly in the Cape District and had the tenacity and courage to bring it to fruition. Entertainment included Gospel singer, Phillippine Morkel from Radio Pulpit, Da Capa opera singers and Mobi arts Echo Therapy from Gugulethu. Residents enjoyed the special Birthday cake with photographs of past Management, staff and residents made by Carine Goshai and wonderful time hosted by Master of Ceremonies, Mr Ian Lamont, was had by all. The birthday cake was cut by our longest Life-right resident, Mrs Etta Anderson, who took occupation of her cottage on 10th February 1993.
