With more than 1 300 positive cases reported since February 2023, an outbreak of mumps has been confirmed in South Africa. Mumps, an acute viral infection caused by the rubulavirus, causes painful swelling of the parotid and/or salivary glands. While this is generally a mild childhood disease, mostly affecting children aged five to nine, anyone can become infected.

Administered in two doses of a single injection, this shot offers protection against measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). The first dose is recommended at 12 to 15 months, and the second at 5 to 6 years. Both doses are needed to ensure full protection.
