Ever thought about the things you could do less to improve your mental health?

So often we think of things we could add to our already busy lives: exercise, meditation, more fruit & veg…

Ever thought of things you could do less? Here are some ideas:
📱 less screen time
🍷 less alcohol
🙇🏾‍♀️ less isolation
⏰ less hurriedness

In 2024, 30 years of Counselling Psychology in the UK 🇬🇧 coalesces with 30 years of Democracy in South Africa 🇿🇦

A pleasure to have joined the community of Counselling Psychologists in the UK, celebrating 30 years as part of The British Psychological Society! Thoroughly enjoyed the Division of Counselling Psychology’s Annual Conference 2024 at Glasgow Caledonian University.

My mentor, Emeritus Professor Jacqueline Akhurst, and I - two Counselling Psychologists from South Africa - enjoyed networking with colleagues and presenting our papers.

30 years on and we’ve come a long way, and yet we still have a way to go

Thank you to the organisers, and those who shared their work and continued to show that psychology is an important site to think about (and enact) social justice.

Checking in from my practice: How are we doing?

It’s quarter-to-June which means it’s quarter-to-mid-year. What a dynamic first half it has been!

Let’s check-in on our holistic well-being. Remember the (F)? Rate yourself 1 (not so good) to 5 (great)in each of these areas:

S - social wellness
M - mental wellness
S - spiritual wellness
P - physical wellness
E - emotional wellness
(F - financial wellness)

Did you know? I’m also an engaged researcher.

I’ve so appreciated my community of practice. The community, the encouragement and the intellectual guidance has been such a protective factor to my mental health.

📍The Monument, Makhanda ZA 🇿🇦

We explored Transcultural Frames of Therapeutic Intervention the other day.

We considered what The (1820 Settler’s) Monument could reveal to us about the histories and social-cultural contextual experiences of our clients.

We considered what other-than-human entities could reveal to us about healing… about healing practices.

Not still Grahamstown, and not yet Makhanda. This is us!

What a privilege it is to continue to shape the next cohort of culturally competent psychologists!

Therapist • Teacher • Researcher • Engaged Citizen

I’ve really enjoyed teaching this course over the last few weeks!

_Cultural Competencies: Sociocultural contextual factors and Working with Marginalisation in South Africa_

I’ve loved grappling with our emerging Counselling Psychologists! It’s an honour to be part of their training.

Therapist • Teacher • Researcher • Engaged Citizen

In addition to being a psychotherapist, I am also a researcher.

I’ve spent the first few months of 2022 pouring over my research together with the team.

We’re a cohort of scholars trying to address some of the socio-educational challenges of the Eastern Cape 🇿🇦 I’ve partnered with a local NGO and I seek to show that it’s their community-engaged praxis that has contributed to the shifts we’re witnessing
