On 18 September, Fort England Hospital’s Occupational Therapy Department proudly hosted a vibrant Heritage Day event honouring South Africa’s rich cultural diversity. All in attendance were dressed in their beautiful cultural garb, looking vibrant and radiant as ever.

Patients showcased incredible talents ranging from powerful choreographed dance routines and soulful songs rooted in cultural traditions, to moving poetry that left everyone inspired.

The event was a beautiful reminder of unity, resilience, and the importance of celebrating our heritage together.

Yesterday on 10 September, an excellent Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) session took place at the clubhouse in Fort England Psychiatric Hospital!

A huge thank you to Deputy Director of OHS Ms. Lungile Nxasana for delivering such a comprehensive and informative presentation that covered essential OHS topics and provided detailed insights into Injury on Duty policies.

All attendees walked away with valuable knowledge and expressed their appreciation for the enlightening session. It was so wonderful to see that all in attendance engaged in a healthy discussion about workplace safety!

Portfolio Committee Presentations – Fort England Psychiatric Hospital & Joza Clinic

On 15 August, the Makana Sub-District welcomed members of the Portfolio Committee and the Legislature. In attendance were officials from Bhisho, the HOD, DDG, municipal representatives, and members of the labour union.

The purpose of the visit was for Fort England Psychiatric Hospital and the Joza Clinic to present a status report highlighting both achievements and challenges. Our CEO, Ms. N.C. Jadezweni, delivered a detailed presentation outlining key successes, ongoing challenges, and proposed solutions.

Both the newly appointed Hospital Board and the CEO emphasized the shared concern that mental health is not prioritized to the same extent as other health conditions in the Makana community.

Encouragingly, members of the Portfolio Committee and Legislature responded positively, noting their commitment to supporting improvements in the mental health sector within Makhanda.

On 14 August 2025, Fort England Psychiatric Hospital proudly elected its new Hospital Board Members. Following a comprehensive induction process, our new board is well-prepared and committed to serving both the hospital and the wider community of Makhanda.
We are proud to introduce our newly elected board:

Fort England Psychiatric Hospital Update

On 14 August 2025, our CEO officially inducted the new Hospital Board, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in our governance structure.
The purpose of this internal mini-induction was to introduce the Board Members to our hospital staff, help them familiarize themselves with their roles and functions, and reaffirm their responsibility to the community of Makhanda.

During the proceedings, the newly elected Chairperson, Mr. Xolani Simakuhle, expressed his commitment to both the hospital and the Makhanda community, emphasizing the importance of bringing hospital services closer to the people we serve.

We warmly welcome our new Board Members and look forward to working together in strengthening mental health care for our community.

Strengthening Mental Health Together

On 31 July 2025, stakeholders from various institutions within the Sarah Baartman District gathered at Fort England Psychiatric Hospital to officially establish a Mental Health Forum.

This collaborative initiative aims to find solutions to the challenges faced by mental health service users, while working to reduce stigma and foster the reintegration of individuals into their families and communities.

Mr. Wezile Tshali, Director of Mental Health Services in the Eastern Cape, addressed the gathering and outlined how the forum will operate moving forward. His message emphasized the importance of unity in tackling the pressing issues within the Mental Health Department and building a supportive environment for those living with mental health conditions.

The day concluded with the nomination of committee members from various departments and organizations — a powerful step that highlights the shared commitment to approach mental health from all angles.

Together, we are paving the way for a more inclusive and understanding society.

On the 30th of June 2025, NEHAWU proudly celebrated the 38th birthday of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) under the powerful theme: "Strengthen Workplace Organization, Deepen Class Consciousness, and Advance Internationalism."
This milestone reminded all in attendance of the importance of unity between the union, management, and leadership across all institutions. This marked a recommitting to building stronger communication channels and working collectively to defend and advance workers' rights.
As they look to the future, NEHAWU remains steadfast in its mission to ensure dignity, fairness, and justice in the workplace for many more years to come.
