Yay for OLA open day!

A body composition and interpretation by a registered medical practitioner is not only for people who wish to loose body fat. It is also for those who are interested to see what their ratio between fat and muscle is, mineral density (not a replacement for DEXA), visceral fat, muscle and fat distribution. BMI is still a valuable clinical tool to use but I reserve it for screening purposes. Our bodies are all unique and need different approaches.

At OLA we follow guidelines according to the World Obesity Federation and focus on evidence based programmes for our patients.

Influenza A (blue line) on a steep rise in our community and we are seeing it at the practice too.

What prevents Influenza? The flu vaccine 😊

Influenza is actually quite a serious illness and is especially dangerous for young babies, the elderly, in pregnancy and anyone with a reduced immune system. For the ones who live through it, it causes severe body aches and fever. Patients typically need to rest for 5-7 days before being able to continue with their usual work and leisure activities.

Can kids get the flu shot? Yes!
Can I get the flu shot in pregnancy? Yes and you should!
But it will make me ill. No… not really only mild symptoms that resemble the beginning of a cold and would not be severe enough to need medication or stay away from work.

Who else will benefit in particular?
All members of the family where multigenerational and especially elderly people live.
Anyone travelling alot
Young families with babies
Families with kids in school/creche
Open work space
Frequent face to face meetings

My history in sugical assisting because a few of you have been asking:

In 2013 I convinced Martin to move from Bloemfontein to Cape Town where he opened a surgical practice in Mediclinic Cape Town. I started my community service at New Somerset Hospital in the same year and started helping him out after hours/weekends.

11 years later, I do a few fixed lists every week with Martin and a few other surgeons in Cape Town. I often do after hours too and weekends (permitting!)
Elective lists consist of laparoscopic colectomies, hysterectomies, sacrocalpropexies, laparoscopic surgery for removal of endometriosis… we do alot of hernia repairs and ano-rectal cases too.

On weekends or after hours I mostly help out with caesarean sections, appendicectomies and cholecystectomies.

Why do I love theatre?
A quiet and controlled environment. No surprises… and when there are surprises, everyone knows what to do and how to get to the end safely. An entire team dedicated to one person in this given time. Visible reversal of illness and a renewed respect for the human body and what it can overcome.
It keeps me humble. It keeps things interesting. And I get to see my husband 😉

Welcome Dr Caity Cattell ☀️

Caity is well known to private GP practice as a regular consulting doctor in Cape Town.

She approaches her patients with compassion and likes to keep the broader picture in mind. She is a thorough and sharp clinican.
