Reasons Why Sports & Remedial Massage would Benefit Long-Distance Runners:

Targeted sports massage can contribute to running more efficiently and recovering from an event more quickly. Pre-event massage promotes endurance and performance; post-event massage reduces pain and enhances recovery.

Training for and performing in long-distance running events places high demands on your body. The long training sessions typically put in by an athlete, the mileage your body clocks in, the repetitive movements over long periods of time, the impact-shocks from feet repetitively striking the running surface, all take a high toll on joints, tendons and muscles.

Sports and remedial massage can make a noticeable difference to your performance and recovery. An individualised and specifically targeted recovery strategy can alleviate stiffness and soreness. Aside from enhancing your performance, a pre-event massage can also reduce vulnerability to injury. To protect your body from the demands of endurance running, sports and remedial massage should be an essential component of your training regime.

Lactic Acid vs DOMS: Clearing Up the Misconception:
Lactic acid causes that burning sensation you experience during intense exercise. It dissipates within an hour. The muscle pain and soreness or DOMS—Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness—that you experience the following day, is caused by microscopic muscle damage.
Sports Massage Therapy can help in the recovery process by reducing inflammation, increasing blood flow, and relieving pain.
Click the link to the article, where I explain more about how lactic acid is created and removed by the body. It also looks at DOMS and massage in more detail.

Massage Therapy and Individuals Working on Computers All Day
For those who spend long hours at the computer, massage therapy is truly a game-changer. Neck, shoulder and back pain, tension and poor posture are the results of repetitive movements and prolonged sitting. Massage releases muscle tightness, relieves stress and improves blood flow. Regular massages improve flexibility and promote relaxation thereby countering the harmful effects of sedentary lifestyles. Over and above the physical benefits of massage, it also contributes to the alleviation of mental fatigue, improving your ability to remain focused and productive. For any person stuck to their computer all day, a massage is not just a luxury but an essential means of maintaining overall health and well-being.

How does Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy benefit Casual Cyclists?
Casual cyclists greatly benefit from sports massage therapy. It enhances their performance as well as their comfort. Due to the repetitive motion and prolonged postural position of cycling it often causes tightness in the calves, hamstrings, quads and lower back. Sports massage alleviates muscular tension, improves flexibility and prevents soreness by increasing blood flow to problematic areas.
In cycling the overuse of the quads in comparison to the hamstrings, often leads to muscular imbalances which increase the risk of injury. Regular sports massage treatments will greatly reduce potential injuries resulting from such imbalances. Massage encourages faster recovery after rides and reduces stiffness. It enhances overall mobility resulting in more efficient and enjoyable rides.

Sports and Remedial Massage is a therapy directed at preventing and treating pain, tension and muscular injuries. The focus is on the soft tissues—muscles, tendons and ligaments—through the use of techniques like deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and assisted or passive stretching. Although this therapy was originally developed for athletes, it is also beneficial to those suffering from musculoskeletal problems, helping in reducing pain, enhancing recovery and improving flexibility. This massage therapy tends to the needs of the individual, albeit to boost athletic performance, for injury rehabilitation or to bring relief from daily discomfort caused by stress or posture and repetitive strain injuries.
