BARRIER METHODS include: condoms, s***micides, diaphragm, sponge and cervical cap. These methods block s***m from getting into your uterus.
Barrier methods are safe and have few or no serious side effects, but they must be used correctly and consistently each time you have s*xual in*******se.
While some barrier methods may reduce the risk of STIs, they can’t prevent transmission in every case. Regular STI testing is recommended, even if you or your partner don’t have symptoms.
🔸Male condoms: +/- 85% effective if they’re worn before in*******se begins and don’t rip. Condoms are one of the best options for protection against STIs.
🔸Female condoms: about 21% of people get pregnant each year despite using a female condom.
🔸Spermicide: if used alone, it is about 70% effective. Vaginal gels are more effective (85-93% effective), however they require a prescription.
🔸Diaphragm: about 87% effective. Can be as high as 94% effective when used correctly (with s***micide) and consistently.
🔸Cervical cap: about 78% effective at preventing pregnancy, but can be 85% effective if used with a s***micide.
🔸Sponge: between 76% and 91% effective (depending on if you use it correctly). More effective if you’ve never given birth.
We will be discussing hormonal devices in our next post, keep an eye out! 🙏
