Mandela Day 2025

The Bongi Ngema-Zuma (BNZ) Foundation, is grateful for the opportunity to visit Issy Geshen Lamontville Home for the Aged, in commemoration of Mandela Day 2025. This engagement aligns with the third strategic pillar of our Foundation, which is
dedicated to empowering and uplifting vulnerable communities, including women, children and the elderly.

About BNZ Foundation

Founded in August 2010, the Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation is driven by a mission to promote health awareness, with a special focus on diabetes, while also advancing education and socio-economic development.

Our vision
To see a South Africa where diabetes ceases to be a killer due to lack of awareness.

The growing challenge of Diabetes

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) diabetes Atlas 11th Edition 2025, diabetes continues to have a significant and growing impact:

• 589 million adults (20-79 years) currently live with diabetes worldwide
• This represents 1 in 9 adults
• The number is projected to rise to 853 million by 2050

In South Africa diabetes is now ranked among the leading causes of death, highlighting the urgent need
for public education and preventive health interventions.

Our Health Initiative for Mandela Day 2025

In response to this growing health crisis and in the spirit of Mandela Day, we will be visiting Issy Geshen Lamontville Home for the Aged
to offer free blood glucose and blood pressure screening, diabetes education, light exercises and gifts handover during our visit. All attendees – including residents, staff and security personnel – are encouraged to participate in health screening.

We are deeply honored to be part of this meaningful day and look forward to spending quality time with
the beloved residents – oGogo noMkhulu-and sharing in moments of warmth, care and community.

Together we can save more lives.

A four-month-old baby, pictured here with her mother, Director of NCDs, Dr Busisiwe Ndlovu, and Madam Dr Bongi Ngema-Zuma, was diagnosed with diabetes during the community event held today at Mmakaunyane Clinic in Moretele Municipality, North West. Parents were encouraged to bring their children to be screened for diabetes at this event.

Led by Deputy Minister of Health, Dr-Joe Phaahla, and the North West MEC for Health, in collaboration with the Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation, this large-scale diabetes screening initiative was a great success, with over 60% of those diagnosed previously unaware of their condition.

The involvement of children, with nine cases under age 12 and the youngest being just 4 months old, underscored the importance of early detection and diagnosis, especially in reaching families in remote communities. Diabetes in babies, although rare and serious, can occur due to genetic or specific health factors. Screening and early diagnosis of conditions like diabetes and hypertension are vital for saving lives.
