In this 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis, people receiving probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics experienced a significantly greater decrease in depression and anxiety scores compared to people who didn't take them! Further evidence suggesting addressing the gut-brain connection with inexpensive, safe therapies can help improve quality of life!

Are you recommending probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics with clients who have mental health symptoms?

The spotlight is still in WC, Hartenbos on SACLC Inge van Niekerk! 🌸. 💚The gustatory sense—our sense of taste—plays a key role in breastfeeding, both for the infant and the mother-infant bonding process.

Newborn babies are born with fully functional taste buds, particularly sensitive to sweet tastes and less sensitive to salty, bitter, or sour flavours.

This sweetness activates the baby’s gustatory receptors, encouraging them to suckle.

A mother’s diet can subtly change the flavour of her breast milk. Infants exposed to a variety of flavours (e.g., garlic, vanilla, spices) may become more accepting of different foodsduring the weaning process.

Did you know pleasant taste activates the baby’s reward pathways, which promote positive associations with feeding and bonding

There is a mother-baby feedback mechanism because the baby enjoys the taste, which leads to more active feeding, in turn increasing prolactin and oxytocin.

Which leads to more milk production, better let down and emotional bonding
Beauchamp, G. K., & Mennella, J. A. (2009).
