:
A recent Back-Care Awareness presentation and demonstration led by a team of Heidelberg Hospital Physiotherapists, was tailored to support the laundry and cleaning staff members, in protecting their backs and avoiding common injuries.

Laundry and cleaning daily activities often involve repetitive bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling, which puts the back at risk if done improperly.

In a Back-Care Awareness event that unfolded yesterday, the following summary of valuable insights was shared during the session.

Understanding the Back and its Mechanics:

The physiotherapist began by explaining the basic mechanics of the spine, focusing on how the vertebrae, muscles, and nerves work together to enable movement and support the body. The back is resilient but prone to injury if misused over time, especially in physically demanding roles.

Key Techniques for Injury Prevention:

The presentation covered a variety of strategies that can help protect the back, including:

1. Correct Lifting Techniques:
When lifting heavy items, staff members should keep the load close to their body, bend at the knees, and avoid twisting. This technique minimizes strain on the lower back and engages stronger leg muscles for support.

2. Awareness of Posture:
Maintaining a neutral spine while standing, sitting, or bending is essential. For cleaners, frequently reaching down or stretching, keeping the back straight, and avoiding excessive leaning were emphasized to reduce back strain.

3. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises:
Regular stretching and exercises that strengthen core muscles were recommended. These exercises improve overall posture and add stability, reducing the likelihood of injury during repetitive tasks.

4. Using Tools and Ergonomics:
The physiotherapist encouraged staff to utilize the available tools and equipment for heavy lifting and repetitive motions. Adjustable mops, carts, and other ergonomic equipment can greatly ease the strain on the back.

The session concluded with a reminder that back health is a continuous priority. By regularly practicing proper techniques and exercises, staff members can prevent pain and enjoy greater comfort on the job.

Overall, the Back-Care awareness presentation equipped our team with practical, easy-to-implement strategies that are crucial to their roles. Protecting their backs means better personal health and the ability to work efficiently and comfortably.

Collaboration remains the key factor in tackling possible hospital-acquired health risks, which is why Heidelberg Hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Coordinator, Sister Nontobeko Nkonyane and her team, took it upon themselves to collaborate with other internal stakeholders, in sensitizing staff members about IPC health standards.

This significant joint operation took place at Heidelberg Hospital on Wednesday, 23 October 2024, as part of commemorating IPC Week 2024. Where the focus was on critical issues such as prevention of viruses and bacteria infections, environmental cleaning, Antimicrobial resistance, and Occupational Health and Safety.

The event brought together healthcare professionals to discuss effective strategies for managing pressure sores, combating antimicrobial resistance, ensuring cleanliness and spill management, and enhancing medical surveillance practices.

One of the primary topics addressed was pressure sores management, where Mr. Nkanyiso Sithole, the Chief Physiotherapist, emphasized on the importance of early intervention to prevent and manage the development of pressure sores. Techniques such as regular repositioning of bed-ridden patients, the use of specialized mattresses, and comprehensive skin assessments were highlighted as essential practices.

The presentation underscored the need for continuous training of staff to enhance patient outcomes.

“The are many ways of preventing the development of bed sores on a patient, but the easiest and the cheapest one is to make the patient mobile. Move the patient out of the bed as often as possible,” said Mr. Sithole.

In terms of Pharmaceutical, the discussion on Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) raised awareness about the threat it poses to healthcare systems. Presenters advocated for judicious use of antibiotics, stressing that healthcare providers must adhere to guidelines for prescribing antibiotics.

The importance of educating patients about AMR and involving them in their treatment plans was also emphasized by the Pharmacist, Ms. Carlien Liebenberg, and fostering a culture of responsibility in antibiotic use. She further encouraged members of the public to follow the correct channels when disposing their unused or expired medication.

“Do not stop to take your antibiotics when you start feeling better. There is a reason why antibiotics are given for a specific time. If prescribed for five days, finish the course. Do not ask your doctor for antibiotics if not needed. If you have an expired medication at home, make sure you follow the correct process when disposing. Take it to your nearest hospital, it is a safest method to follow,” said Ms. Liebenberg.

Maintaining a clean environment in healthcare settings is vital for preventing infections. The presentation outlined best practices for managing cleanliness and spillages, including the importance of regular cleaning protocols and immediate response to spill incidents. Stakeholders were encouraged to implement training programmes for cleaners, to ensure compliance with IPC standards.

As an ending note, the session covered the role of medical surveillance in infection prevention. Attendees learned about the importance of monitoring infection rates and patterns within healthcare facilities. Effective surveillance systems enable timely identification of outbreaks and facilitate prompt action, ultimately improving patient safety.

Most importantly, regular washing of hands with water and hand washing soap for at least 40 seconds remains a golden rule in eliminating the catch and transfer of bacteria and viruses from an individual to another.

: Heidelberg Hospital is maintaining its promise to deliver quality healthcare to its clientele.

This time, people residing within the perimeters and outskirts of Heidelberg will continue to reap the fruits of courteous service delivery, as the hospital is among the facilities under Sedibeng District Health Services that received OHSC compliance certificates.

This gesture indicates that all recognized facilities are equipped to save a life according to OHSC findings.

The Office of Health Standard Compliance (OHSC) is an independent body that ensures compliance regarding the required health standards in the public and private sectors. The final installment of the certificate-issuing ceremony unfolded at Heidelberg Hospital on Friday, 18 October 2024, where the acting Chief Director for Sedibeng District Health Services, Mr. Lindani Sonwabo commended every individual for setting the bar high in the entire Gauteng Province.

“We can proudly say we are the first health district in the entire province to have all facilities certified. This simply means we are ready for the NHI, because all health facilities need to go through OHSC in order to be accredited for the NHI.

In Sedibeng District, we have Sebokeng Regional Hospital, Kopanong District Hospital, Heidelberg Hospital, and 38 clinics. All these facilities have been accredited. I would like to thank everybody within the health sector because everybody is important. You cannot have a good doctor without a good porter who is going to bring the patient,” said Mr Sonwabo.

In closing, the CEO of Heidelberg Hospital Dr. Itumeleng Molatlhegi could not contain her gratitude towards the Heidelberg Hospital team for pulling through.

“I wish to extend the words of gratitude to the Logistics Manager. Most of the Admin and Support is under him. I wish that God continues to grant him strength and remain as he is. I also wish to extend my gratitude to the Nursing staff.

Nurses at Heidelberg Hospital are like diamonds, they can stand the heat. I wish to highly appreciate the interns of Heidelberg Hospital, they are very grateful and they are always there passionately and excelling in whatever they do. Thank you very much to the entire Heidelberg Hospital team. I wish to say continue supporting me,” said Dr. Molatlhegi.

Heidelberg Hospital prides itself on continuously rendering quality healthcare services to Heidelberg community.

Recently, the courtesy descended upon employees as they participated in various activities as part of commemorating Nutrition Week 2024, under the theme “Eat right for a better life”.

During the initial setup of the campaign, which unfolded on Wednesday, 09 October 2024. Heidelberg Hospital Dietetics Unit had a scene setting, where employees had a fruitful nutritional education on healthy eating practices, lifestyle modification, and health screening for employees.

According to Sinenhlanhla Cele the Dietician, it is imperative for staff members to take care of themselves by following a strict healthy diet and exercising regularly.

“This year, we are shining the spotlight on the unsung heroes of the hospital, our employees. As dietitians, we are always focused on helping our patients, but we realized it is time to prioritize your well-being as staff members.

Our theme, "Eat Right for Better Health," takes on a special meaning this year as we emphasize employee wellness. We want to ensure that you, our dedicated staff, are fueling your bodies with the right foods to maintain your energy, focus, and overall health. By taking care of yourself, you will be more empowered to provide exceptional care to our patients. As the week progressed, the second instalment of the campaign saw employees participating in a 2.5km Fun Walk, which took place on Friday. The Fun Walk served as a prerequisite for a healthy lifestyle journey for employees who committed to venture into a healthy lifestyle.

As a wrap-up session, the Dietetics team conducted the nutritional education, which was beneficial to both staff members and patients.

: Heidelberg Hospital continues to be courteous toward its surroundings, as the institutional pharmacy team opted to share the valuable clinical expertise with patients, as part of commemorating Pharmacy Month, in
an awareness outreach programme that unfolded in Heidelberg 'Ueckerman' Clinic yesterday.

The Pharmacy team raised awareness among the patients about the importance of vaccinating their children from birth until the age of 12, as per the EPI-SA Childhood immunization schedule. Where Ms. Rhode Boon elucidated to patients about the effectiveness of vaccines when administered to one's body.

“Vaccines are used to stimulate the system to specific infectious diseases or pathogen, prepared from an inactivated or weakened form of the agent. Vaccines give your body a little bit of the disease to build your immune system against it. So, when your body gets exposed to this specific disease or pathogen, the immune system recognizes it and can fight it. The main factor is to eliminate vaccine-preventable diseases," said Ms. Boon.

Post the information-sharing slot, the question-and-answer session followed, where participants bagged themselves small tokens of appreciation for actively participating in the session.

Prior to this particular awareness, the in-house training took place where Heidelberg Hospital pharmacy team was briefed by the Pharmaceutical Company regarding vaccines and immunization, in a session that was attended by all pharmacy staff members. More activities still to come.
