CHICKEN POX

Yes, chicken pox is going around in the schools in Somerset West currently.

--
Chickenpox is an illness caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It brings on an itchy rash with small, fluid-filled blisters. Chickenpox spreads very easily to people who haven't had the disease or haven't gotten the chickenpox vaccine. Chickenpox used to be a widespread problem, but today the vaccine protects children from it.

The chickenpox vaccine is a safe way to prevent this illness and the other health problems that can happen during it.

What is familial hypercholesterolemia?

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder that gives you very high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. LDL is the “bad” cholesterol that can lead to cholesterol plaque buildup in your arteries. This can eventually cause heart attacks, strokes or peripheral artery disease.

LACTOSE INTOLERANCE
People with lactose intolerance are unable to fully digest the sugar (lactose) in milk. As a result, they have diarrhea, gas and bloating after eating or drinking dairy products. The condition, which is also called lactose malabsorption, is usually harmless, but its symptoms can be uncomfortable.

Too little of an enzyme produced in your small intestine (lactase) is usually responsible for lactose intolerance. You can have low levels of lactase and still be able to digest milk products. But if your levels are too low you become lactose intolerant, leading to symptoms after you eat or drink dairy.

MENINGITIS
Meningitis is an infection and swelling, called inflammation, of the fluid and membranes around the brain and spinal cord. These membranes are called meninges.

The inflammation from meningitis most often triggers symptoms such as headache, fever and a stiff neck.

Viral infections are the most common cause of meningitis in the United States. Bacteria, parasites and fungi also can cause it. Sometimes meningitis improves in a few weeks without treatment. But meningitis also can cause death. It often needs quick treatment with antibiotics.

Seek medical care right away if you think that you or someone in your family has meningitis. For meningitis caused by bacteria, early treatment can prevent serious complications.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF HAIR LOSS?
Some types of hair loss are permanent, while others are temporary. The most common types of hair loss include:

Androgenic alopecia: This type of hereditary baldness can affect anyone (male pattern baldness or hair loss in women).

Alopecia areata: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that results in hair loss from the head and body.

Telogen effluvium: This type of hair loss involves rapid shedding of hair in a short amount of time. It typically happens a few months after your body goes through something physically or emotionally stressful. It can also result from sudden hormonal changes.

Anagen effluvium: This very rapid hair loss occurs due to certain medical treatments, such as chemotherapy.

WHAT IS KYPHOSIS?
Kyphosis is an excessive forward rounding of the upper back.

In older people, kyphosis is often due to weakness in the spinal bones that causes them to compress or crack. Other types of kyphosis can appear in infants or teens. These types are due to malformation of the spine or wedging of the spinal bones over time.

Mild kyphosis causes few problems. Serious kyphosis can cause pain and be disfiguring. Treatment for kyphosis depends on your age, and the cause and seriousness of the curvature.

WHAT IS XEROSIS?
Dry skin makes the skin look and feel rough, itchy, flaky or scaly. The location where these dry patches form vary from person to person. It's a common condition that affects people of all ages.

Dry skin, also known as xerosis or xeroderma, has many causes, including cold or dry weather, sun damage, harsh soaps, and overbathing.

You can do a lot on your own to improve dry skin, including moisturizing and practicing sun protection year-round. Try various products and skin care routines to find an approach that works for you.

WHO IS AT RISK FOR OSTEOPOROSIS?
Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or even mild stresses such as bending over or coughing can cause a break. Osteoporosis-related breaks most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine.

Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn't keep up with the loss of old bone.

Osteoporosis affects men and women of all races. But white and Asian women, especially older women who are past menopause, are at highest risk. Medicines, healthy diet and weight-bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss or strengthen already weak bones.

WHAT CAUSES WARTS?
Warts appear when you become infected with a virus from the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. The virus promotes excessive production of keratin, a protein that makes up the top layer of skin. This rapid cell growth causes thick, hard skin to build up in the area of infection. These skin growths are noncancerous. Warts can take anywhere from weeks to months to appear after a person is infected with HPV.

Not everyone who encounters HPV will develop warts, because the virus attacks the body’s immune system and everyone’s immune system functions differently. Risk factors include age, as well as the condition of the skin and immune system.
