Dr. Manuel Salvadori, Functional Medicine physician in Italy, is addressing those with COVID19 in his practice using the following protocol. To quote him directly in response to me asking how his patients were faring with what he’s prescribing: “It's not possible to evaluate results on the CoVID-19, as you can't really tell if people are enduring it better than others, given the statistics that we have... How do you protect your and your family's immune health?
Here's what you can do...

DIET AND GENERAL HEALTH
While there are no dietary recommendations for COVID-19 in particular, there are many nutritional strategies to boost immune health.

What you eat and do today will affect your immune health today.

- Maintain a healthy, nutritionally dense diet (micronutrient density has a direct positive correlation to immune health).
- Minimise sugar consumption (studies have shown that refined sugars can suppress your immune system for as much as 6 hours after eating).
- Maximise your sleep (it is recommended to get at least 7.5 hours of sleep per night to boost immune health).
- Minimise stress (the sympathetic nervous system - fight or flight response - can significantly effect how your immune system operates).
- Eat more oily fish (omega-3's are essential for immune health and cannot be produced by the body making dietary sources particularly important)
- Take a probiotic (the immune system starts in the gut - making sure your gut is functioning well is an essential aspect of fighting off infections).

MICRONUTRIENTS IN IMMUNE HEALTH

Vitamins:
Vitamins A, C and E - maintain the structure and function of
the mucus cells lining the respiratory and digestive tract,
acting as a barrier against infections.
Vitamin D - works with T cells (the body’s natural killer
cells) to fight off infection and disease.
The Vitamin B family - this includes thiamin, riboflavin,
niacin, folate, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, biotin and
pantothenic acid. The B vitamins work collectively and
individually in every cell to perform many different roles.
Deficiencies in B vitamins have been linked to impaired
immune response.

Minerals:
Iron – necessary for immune cells proliferation and
maturation. Iron deficiency has been shown to impair the
immune system.
Selenium – a powerful antioxidant which influences both
inflammation and the immune response. Selenium is also
vital in the production of the enzyme glutathione
peroxidase, which helps detoxify the body.
Zinc – is critical for the normal development and functioning
of immune cells. Zinc is not stored in the body, therefore
regular intake is important for maintaining the integrity of
the immune system.

Other:
Omega 3 fatty acids - are essential in reducing
inflammation and having a healthy immune system.
Probiotics - not only do they improve digestion, but the
