This isn’t medicine or status.
It's extinction!
Incredible to think that this massive rhino horn — made entirely of keratin, the very same substance as our fingernails and hair — has been responsible for the slaughter of more than 20,000 rhinos across Africa over the last two decades.
A rhino needs its horn. Humans do not.
Rhino horn has no proven medicinal value. None. Yet myths, greed, status symbols, and black market wealth continue to drive one of the most brutal wildlife crimes on Earth.
So why are rhinos poached?
• Traditional medicine myths — particularly in parts of Asia, where rhino horn is falsely believed to cure illnesses or boost vitality.
• Status and wealth — carved horn products and whole horns are seen by some as luxury symbols for the ultra-rich.
• Organised crime — rhino horn is worth more per kilogram than gold on the black market, attracting heavily armed criminal syndicates.
• Demand for dagger handles — especially in Yemen, where rhino horn has historically been used for ceremonial jambiya handles.
While demand for rhino horn dagger handles is far lower today than it once was, it has not disappeared entirely. Antique jambiyas with genuine rhino horn handles are still highly prized in some circles, and illegal trafficking linked to the dagger trade continues alongside the far larger demand driven by traditional medicine myths and status consumption.
What makes this especially tragic is that an entire rhino can be killed for a horn that may ultimately become nothing more than an ornamental dagger handle, decorative luxury item, or speculative investment. A life millions of years in the making reduced to a status symbol.
And the cost?
Not just dead rhinos.
Orphaned calves standing beside butchered mothers.
Rangers losing their lives in firefights with poachers.
Entire ecosystems losing one of Africa’s oldest surviving giants.
A rhino horn belongs on a rhino.
Not in a medicine cabinet.
Not on a shelf.
Not on the handle of a dagger.
Every horn removed by force represents a life ended for absolutely nothing! When the buying stops, the killing can too.....
