The boom in influenza cases particularly influenza A (higher prevalence in school going children) seems to be much higher this season.
Mixed with this is also a few pops of Covid-19 cases and a whack of other viruses and bacteria.
All of these different organisms presenting with similar symptoms and making management challenging.
Fever, body pain, headaches and rigors persists for 3-4 days accompanied by dry cough, post nasal drip and fatigue for at least two weeks.
I have noticed much frustration and concern from patients wondering why these flu symptoms persist over a prolonged period and why flu episodes presented multiple times this season.
This could be due to the isolation period implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our immune system is a like a recognition system. Each time you are exposed to a virus, your body creates antibodies which makes recovery much quicker when exposed to a similar virus later on. During the pandemic our immune systems were mostly inactive, this could be the reason why patients are presenting with multiple infections making recovery much longer and relapse more prevalent.
Another observation is that patients who contracted Covid-19 are now presenting with chronic sinusitis and post nasal drip which if not managed properly could result in sinobronchitis which is far more prevalent now.
It’s good to note that patients recovered well at home, even though it took much longer.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
* One is most infectious when presenting with fever, rigors and body pain. This could be over 3-4 days when viral load is at its highest. It is recommended that you stay home, rest and recover to avoid further spread.
* No sport or high intensity training when symptomatic. This could prolong recovery and result in severe complications.
* More than 90% of flu is viral and does not require antibiotics. Over prescribing antibiotics during this season can result in further resistance.
* Pump up vitamin supplements - Vitamin C, Zinc and Vitamin D which helps with recovery.
* Seek further medical help if you have persistently high fevers, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion and dehydration.
