Between Zoom meetings, calls, and listening to music or Podcasts, we can spend many hours of our day with earphones or AirPods in our ears. What impact does this have?

Here are a few of the problems you can face if you wear earphones for long hours:
- Dizziness
- Hearing loss
- Build up of ear wax
- Ear infections
- Ear pain
- Noise-induced hearing loss
- Tinnitus
- High sensitivity even to normal environmental sounds

There are healthy and safe ways to use earphones. Some things to consider when using your earphones are:

- Most headphones have a maximum volume level of 105 to 110 Decibels, while studies show safe sound levels to be less than 80-85dB.
It is important to always be mindful of
(1) the volume level and
(2) the duration of your headphones use.

- Headphones used at slightly higher sound levels (85dB and above) can cause hearing damage in less than one hour. It is important to remember to take breaks when using headphones, even at a lower volume level.

Be sure to follow our tips to use your earphones safely and keep your ears healthy and functional for longer!

This we're taking a closer look at the sphenoid sinus.

The sphenoid sinus is one of the four paired paranasal sinuses that is contained within the body of the sphenoid bone.

Sometimes, these sinuses can become inflamed resulting is sphenoid sinusitis.

Sphenoid sinusitis symptoms are similar to those of a typical sinus infection. However the most commonly reported symptom, leading to a diagnosis of sphenoid sinusitis, is the onset of a sinus headache, especially in the areas around the forehead and temples. There are several symptoms that can indicate the presence of sphenoid sinusitis, including:

- Headaches
- Earache
- Neck pain
- Pain behind the eyes and around the temples
- Post nasal drip

If left untreated, sphenoid sinusitis may cause
severe complications, such as neurological
symptoms, abscesses in the brain, and
meningitis.

"With swimming season upon us, there's one question we get asked regularly! Should my child use earplugs while swimming? 🏊

Water can easily get trapped in the ears, so earplugs are generally recommended for:

- Kids with recent swimmer's ear (otitis externa)
- Kids with recent middle ear infections (otitis media)
- Kids with ear tubes who are diving. Ear tubes are tiny cylinders that have been placed on the eardrum to help with recurring middle ear infections
- Kids with a history of many ear infections

For other kids, some doctors recommend regular use of swim ear plugs only when diving or frequently swimming in untreated water, such as lakes, rivers and oceans. Plugs prevent water from entering the ears which may also harbour bacteria or other germs and lead to infection."

Keeping your ears clean and healthy is SO important, and it's easier to do than you might think đź‘‚

Here are a few tips to help you do this at home:
- Don't use cotton buds to clean your ears. They can irritate the ear canal and push wax that your ear is trying to rid itself of further inside, which makes it more difficult for your ear to eliminate and to actively remove

- To keep your ears clean, wash the visible part of your ear and behind your ear using a little soap. Then wipe the soap away with rinsed fingers and dry with a thin towel

- Don't immerse your ears in your bath water, as body bacteria may enter your ear canal and could cause an infection

- Don't ignore ear problems; they won't improve without the right treatment. The longer you leave an ear problem, the longer it may take to treat
Be sure to look out for our post later in the month about safe earphone use.

Today, we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl (IDG).

It is incredible to see the difference made globally over these past ten years. Every day, girls are breaking boundaries and barriers, tackling issues like child marriage, education inequality, violence, climate justice, and inequitable access to healthcare. Girls are proving they are unstoppable.

Let's not stop now! It is time for us all to stand accountable – with and for girls – and to invest in a future that believes in their means, leadership and potential.

This we're taking a closer look at the term PRESBYCUSIS!

Presbycusis, otherwise known as age-related hearing loss, is the gradual loss of hearing in both ears. It is a common cause of hearing loss in adults. Age-related hearing loss affects 1 in 3 adults over 65 and nearly half of adults over 75.

The hearing loss associated with presbycusis is caused by degeneration of the neurological structures responsible for transmitting sound to the brain and may present as:

- Difficulty making out higher pitches, such as children’s voices or some electronic sounds (like tones on a cellphone).
- Trouble understanding speech in crowded or noisy places, such as restaurants.
- Tinnitus (ringing, buzzing, roaring noises or “crickets”) in one or both ears.

While hearing loss may be expected as you get older, you don’t have to live with the symptoms especially if it compromised your quality of life in your older years. As people live longer and are nowadays maintain a higher level of overall activity for longer, treatment options have vastly improved to help you live a high quality of life despite hearing difficulties.

Today we celebrate the International Day of Non-Violence and the birthday of a man who helped bring forward the notion of "nonviolence," Mahatma Gandhi.

The International Day of Non-Violence honours how Gandhi's work and legacy have impacted global, non-violent protest.

The term "nonviolence" has been used so frequently in the last century that its meaning has taken on new forms. Often believed to be a synonym for pacifism, which it can be, it's also been adopted by groups worldwide to be a force for social change rather than strictly opposition to war.

Globalization has given us a more productive global economy, but it's also led to more complicated issues that need solving. To help keep these problems from escalating to violence, spreading the ideas — and success stories — of nonviolence will be crucial.

Today is International Day for Older Persons. It is a day when we focus on the older generations of our society.

A longer life brings many opportunities, not only for older people and their families but also for our society as a whole. Additional years provide the chance to pursue new activities such as further education, a new career or pursuing a long-neglected passion.

Older people also contribute in many ways to their families and communities. Yet the extent of these opportunities and contributions depends heavily on health.

Today is a great time to think about the health of the older people around you, and your own health. What can you do now to ensure you remain as healthy as possible as you age? It's time to develop these healthy habits that will set us up for life...watch this space as we try to help!

Today we are going to look at a few misconceptions surrounding allergies to hopefully give us all a better understanding of the condition and it's management.

1. Spring Allergies are only caused by Pollen
As mentioned in a previous post, most patients suffering from allergies have multiple sources for their allergies. These have an additive effect and while symptoms may only occur with the onset of pollen season, all the offending allergens need to be considered in breaching the symptom threshold.

2. Only allergic triggers cause symptoms
It’s not just allergens that can cause allergy symptoms, non-allergic triggers can also produce allergy-like symptoms. Using a new cleaning product, air pollution, perfumes or being around cigarette smoke are examples of non-allergic triggers. These don’t affect the body using the same mechanism as allergic triggers do, so antihistamines won’t help relieve symptoms. But they do contribute to adding to allergic triggers and may be problematic alone or in combination with these.

3. Suffering through Allergy Season is the only option There is a lot you can do to help yourself and control symptoms. No cure doesn't imply a lifelong sentence, it just means we have to be really good at identifying triggers, changing behaviour to effect avoidance, seek medical help and use medication where we have to in oder to control symptoms and end the suffering!

There is no cure or escape unfortunately for allergic rhinitis but there's comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Millions of people worldwide suffer from allergies and in the United States over 80% of people with allergic rhinitis have pollen allergies. If your problem is debilitating only during the Spring months, consider yourself lucky. Although living in Durban, chances are if you are really bad in the spring months, you have some level of discomfort during other months of the year also.

The best solution is to prevent seasonal allergies before the symptoms become debilitating. A prescription nasal spray in combination with an antihistamine is the best form of treatment. But if you are not quite convinced you need medication just yet, here are a few tips that may help :

- Shower after working outside. Wash your hair, eyes, and eyelashes
- Wear sunglasses to protect the eyes from pollen when outdoors
- Remove work clothes outdoors after working outside and carry them in a bag to the washing machine
- If you have been prescribed medication for your allergies, take it at least 30 minutes before going outdoors
- Stay indoors when pollen counts are high for pollens you’re allergic to (this would involve knowing your triggers and checking the pollen counts for your area)
- Delegate yard work to someone else, or wear a microfibre face mask if you absolutely have to do it yourself
- Keep windows closed at home and when driving, and when possible, use an air conditioner.
- Use high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters for vacuum cleaners.

Being aware and recognizing that your symptoms can change from day to day depending on the weather and pollen counts as well as the knowledge that they could be caused by pollen floating in the air from miles away may frustrate you and make controlling symptoms difficult, but learning more about your potential causes and trigger avoidance methods is a good start.

If you are still having difficulty finding relief, it might be time to talk to a doctor or ENT about your concerns.
