An African proverb states that if you must travel fast, you should go alone. But should you have to travel far, ensure that you have companions.
Ultra-trail running clearly falls into the latter category, and coach Dan Willment is the perfect companion for any of your long journeys. Mine started in late 2024 when I signed up for the Karkloof 100 Miler scheduled for September 2025. I had been training under my own steam for the better part of four years at that stage, but with limited progress and general struggles with performance and recovery, I swiftly realised that I needed some professional help. And boy, did he deliver! Perfect structuring with strength and endurance sessions, progressive increases and overloads, combined with a complete openness to crazy curveballs from me, like adding in a 60 km night run and a 100 km outing a month and a half before the event. Everything was encouraged and incorporated to build the meanest training regime that I have ever done!
After the obligatory few weeks of “Let’s see where you are,” a weekly template was put into place. It consisted of runs of several lengths and intensities, with multiple sessions to build fatigue endurance thrown in. With that last part, he is riding the uppermost curve of the current international ultra-trail running training plans. On race day, all the effort paid tremendous dividends, and I was able to keep going on tired legs and finish my first 100-miler in just over 27 hours.
I cannot recommend Dan enough. He is a fantastic trainer, and if you are willing to put in the hard grind and long hours, he will ensure you reach your goal!

Another 100 Miler in the bag.
Some MASSIVE congratulations are in order;
Firstly to fellow team AX member Craig Ventress who had a phenomenal race and finished his first 100 Miler. Your calm, measured and professional approach to these big races is incredible.
Deon Cheisman who trained and ran every step of the race with Craig, also finishing his first 100 Miler.
Cassie Carstens who I have had the pleasure of training online. You put on an absolute masterclass in training and it all came together beautifully on race day. Congratulations on your first 100 Miler.
These types of races are definitely not solo efforts and wouldn’t be possible without a team. A huge thank you to my crew on the day:
Mark Vorwerk; You may have done a few extra kilometres than initially expected but got me through a few dark patches.
Jay Dempsey; One of the most positive guys I’ve ever met. Although your motivational techniques are sometimes a little questionable they definitely get the job done.
Viv Wetherston; You were incredible, having someone who understands running Ultras and race mentality almost feels like a secret weapon on these big races.
The biggest thank you goes to my Wife who gives up so much (sleep is just one of them) to allow me to run 100 Milers. Her seconding skills and understanding of exactly what needs to be done to keep moving forward is pure class.
