I choose to build: My Nation.

At the ReStory Foundation, in all we do we look for potential, trying not to focus on problems or lack. (This is the ‘P’ in our H.O.P.E building model, which we will share more on starting next Sunday.)

To hear the words: ‘I choose to build my nation,’ probably doesn’t sit easily with many of us. Especially in KwaZulu-Natal, where not only are we struggling with load shedding, contaminated sea water and growing lawlessness, but a looming and real water crisis too.
The corruption, crime, material poverty and inequality is so vast and deep across our land, that it can seem pointless to consider being a nation builder.
These are real problems.

But what of our potential?

At this point I am reminded of the family, friends and visitors who come to South Africa, and are mostly unaffected by the issues we live with.
They are often in awe of, and delighted by the warmth of our people, the explosion of diversity in our landscape, cultures and cuisine, the laughter, creative solutions, noise, resilience, friendly banter with strangers, kindness, wildness and humour. And the goodness of most of us.

These things are within each of our grasp. They are things we can grow in ourselves, our schools and our families and work places.
They do not need to be choked by the reality of our issues.

I choose to build my nation with all that is in my grasp.
And to vote, of course.
