Evergreen Parnell excited for Tuskers adventure
PIETERMARITZBURG - In one of the big off-season signings former Proteas all-rounder Wayne Parnell is set to make the AET Pietermaritzburg Oval his home when he joins the ACDC Express Tuskers for the upcoming season.
The Tuskers produced a season to remember last campaign earning promotion back to Division 1 and they have wasted little time in strengthening their squad ahead of the new season with Parnell being one of the high-profile signings for the Maritzburg Men.
Having played his cricket all around the country whether it be in Western Province, Warriors or Pretoria Capitals colours, Parnell's competitive fire still burns bright.
"I might be going into the last few years of my career, but the goal still remains the same, winning is always at the forefront of why I play cricket," Parnell said. "Winning will continue to be the ultimate goal, but the first priority for the team is to make sure that they in Division 1.
"We also want to establish a culture that is geared towards winning and if we can achieve that this season then that puts us in a good position going forward.
"This game is played for enjoyment but ultimately we play to win."
The 35-year-old all-rounder says that joining the Tuskers wasn't a difficult decision after meeting with head coach Ahmed Amla.
"Ahmed Amla has the biggest part to play in me coming to Pietermaritzburg. We had a conversation that was pretty open and honest, and quite frank, with regards to what he was looking for and the expectations.
"That aligned with where I was at and my thinking, so it was a pretty straightforward decision after that. A few days after our discussion I ended up signing.
"Ahmed (Amla) is someone that I respect, and I've known him for my whole career and I'm really looking forward to linking up with him again," Parnell added.
With the likes of Parnell and Hardus Viljoen joining captain Michael Erlank, Kagiso Rapulana and Ziyaad Abrahams there is a strong group of experienced players in their line-up. Parnell hopes to add value throughout the squad.
"You want to reward the guys that brought the team up from Division 2 and there is also a good influx of experience into the squad.
"If I can add any sort of value to any of the players there that would be part of my job description and doing that is appealing for me," Parnell commented.
