Today is World Cancer Day 🎗️

Every cancer journey is unique, with its own challenges and triumphs. Yet, those touched by cancer are united in their shared goals: to fight, heal, and support.

As a paediatric surgeon, I play a vital role in the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of certain childhood cancers. This includes performing biopsies, placing chemoports, and removing tumours from the kidney, liver, go**ds, and soft tissues.

Together, we continue the fight, raise awareness, and support those in need.

My child developed flu symptoms before (non-urgent) surgery: What happens now?

Respiratory infections can affect wound healing and the way your child’s body responds to anesthesia, potentially increasing the risk of complications and prolonging the length of hospital stay.

If your child develops runny nose, fever, cough, sinusitis or sore throat in the days leading up to surgery, it is important to inform your surgeon and anesthetist. They will determine whether it is safe to proceed with surgery or if a delay is necessary.

Today, we raise awareness for all preterm babies. Though they may be tiny, their fight is mighty.

Preterm birth can occur for various reasons. Pertinent to the paediatric surgeon, congenital conditions such as intestinal atresias, Hirschsprung disease, imperforate a**s, tracheoesophageal fistula, diaphragmatic hernia, and gastroschisis can lead to preterm birth.

Additionally, premature babies may face surgical complications like necrotizing enterocolitis and intestinal perforation.

A paediatric surgeon, along with a dedicated team of pediatricians, specialists, allied healthcare workers, and nurses, will diagnose and treat these conditions to give these babies the best chance for survival.
