Severe cyclone Kenneth is about to become the first hurricane-force storm to strike Mozambique's northern province in recorded history, and could bring 40 inches of rain!

Kenneth will be the first tropical cyclone with the equivalent of hurricane strength to strike Mozambique's northern province of Cabo Delgado since modern record-keeping began.

CAPE TOWN – Serious flooding prompted the South African Air Force to dispatch helicopters to assist with rescue operations in Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape.

The Alfred Nzo District Municipality on Wednesday urged residents in low-lying areas to monitor water levels and to move to higher ground if necessary.

The municipality’s Lubabalo Majenge said disaster teams were assessing the extent of the damage.

He said in some parts of the municipality river water was flowing over bridges.

"We are still warning people against crossing over the unsafe areas," he said.

A calm beach day turned into a nail-biting rescue mission when a swimmer got into trouble at Thompson’s Bay on Saturday.

One of the beach goers, Kerri Martinaglia said panic broke out when lifeguards began blowing whistles and warning a young lady to swim back into the flagged area.
