Ethembeni Tribe of Hope

We are an independent, registered non-profit organisation with programmes aimed at enabling positive transformation in families.

We serve the community through :
Maternal Health :
Aimed at the first 1000 days of life, from the start of pregnancy until a child's 2nd birthday. We work closely with the Howick and Mpophomeni clinics, engaging with women and educating them about pregnancy, birth and motherhood. We have a pregnancy centre in Mpophomeni which is a safe space for pregnant women and moms with babies and toddlers where we run ante-natal classes, moms and tots groups, counselling and fathers support groups. Education Support :
Our Education Support centre works with 50/60 school children per day. These children receive homework assistance and extra classes in English, math and reading. We have a mentorship programme where we focus on the personal development of each child. Each Friday is a fun Friday where we run extra activities for the children such as cooking/baking, sewing, vegetable gardening and traditional dancing. Family Support :
We have a team that visits families in crisis every Thursday.

On Tuesday a Mom arrived at our centre in labour. We drove her to the local clinic who confirmed that she was in labour and should go to the hospital in Pietermaritzburg. A long story short we decided to drive her down in our ministry vehicle after finding out that her sister could not accompany her and she was feeling quite vulnerable and afraid.
God put us in the right place at the right time as this Mom ended up having an emergency C section but now has a healthy baby boy.
This is what we do best - Ngizohambe Nawe - I will go together with you!

Inspired by 1000 Hearts a lovely lady called Michelle from Yarn Comforts lovingly made us 50 hearts to distribute to those we counsel or just need a reminder in their pocket that God loves them and we care.

On the 2nd of August Ethembeni hosted a campaign, sponsored by the Umngeni Municipality to bring awareness around the devastating effects of teenage pregnancy on a young person's life. Our wonderful speakers spoke about making the right choices in life, the responsibility of parenting a child and costs. There was acted out skits and brave individuals who gave testimony on their experiences! This was a well attended and interactive event which we believe has made a impact on the 156 teenagers who attended.

We are so proud of Sindi Manyoni who graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Education and Bonelelo Mchunu who graduated with a Degree in Clinical Psychology in June. They both have been studying part time while working in Education Support and are a great inspiration to our Ed Support children!

Every afternoon our Education Support welcomes 50 to 70 children after school where they receive assistance with their homework, extra lessons when needed, help with projects and study groups at exam time. These children cope better at school and they stay in school!

We need your help, we are struggling to keep this programme going due to the lack of funding streams available out there.

It's very important for staff who work in the community to have a retreat day from to time where they can unwind, relax and de-stress and be reminded that God loves them. Thank-you to Wendy for hosting us on Friday

A big thank-you to Helen from Zero2Five Trust who had a session with our staff today on how to identify malnutrition and stunting in children and the steps to take to ensure the child gets the help that they need!

Another batch of baby parcels going out to some needy Moms. All this made possible by wonderful donors of beautiful hand made blankets, second hand baby clothes and toiletries from Starfish Foundation

Wonderful donors contributed stationary and pencil bags over December and together with Community Chest, Pmb we were able to supply each child in our Education Support with a small stationary pack. We were also gifted with 2nd hand desks from Cordwalles Prep in Pietermaritzburg which we desperately needed! Thank-you to all our Education Support donors for investing in the lives of these children!
