📢 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 💔

In South Africa, 1 in 3 women experiences violence in her lifetime, often with devastating consequences, including traumatic brain injury (TBI). For many, this violence impacts their ability to speak, think, or swallow—areas where Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) provide life-changing support.

TBI from intimate partner violence can cause communication disorders, cognitive impairments, and swallowing difficulties. SLPs play a crucial role in helping survivors reclaim their voices and independence.

👉 Let’s raise awareness, stand against violence, and support survivors. Together, we can create a safer world for women.

📞 If you or someone you know needs help, reach out to South Africa’s GBV Command Centre: 0800 428 428.

Headway Gauteng provides an essential and life changing service to survivors of brain injury and their families. There is nothing else like Headway in Gauteng, or South Africa, and it has to continue to support those who rely on the therapy, counseling and other forms of support provided. Headway was started by 3 dedicated and incredible mothers of children with brain injuries, and has over the last 30 years, continued to grow and expand support in various communities. Please help in any way you can - big or small. We have to keep Headway going strong, keep the lighthouse shining 💪 🧠💚 🌠

When I did my first adult medical externship, I remember one of the most challenging tasks was explaining my role to new patients and their families. 🤔

Introducing myself as the "speech therapist," often got responses like, "I can talk fine, thanks!" or "I don't need speech therapy."

SLPs work on SO much more than just speaking! 🗣️ We address attention, memory, problem-solving, swallowing, reading, writing... the list goes on. 📋

I eventually got my "spiel" down:

"Hi, I'm Megan. I'm a speech-language pathologist. In speech therapy, we work on communication, as you probably guessed, but I can also help you with thinking skills like attention, memory, problem-solving, and completing everyday tasks. We even help with swallowing food and drink safely.

Are you having any trouble in any of these areas?" 🤓

It wasn’t perfect, but it gave me a starting point! 🙌

How do YOU describe your role as an SLP in your neuro-rehab settings? 💬
