Bradley Naicker, NSRI Vaal Dam station commander, said: NSRI Vaal Dam station 22 duty crew and NSRI Gauteng station 27 crew, while on alert during a local sailing event at the Vaal Dam, on Sunday, 12 October 2025, were alerted to multiple sailing vessels suddenly and unexpectedly caught in distress during a severe storm that developed at approximately 14h00. The unexpected change in wind direction and increased wind speeds, accompanied by a heavy rain storm and severe lightning, resulted in multiple sailing vessels and sailors requiring assistance.

At 13h30, Monday, 13 October, NSRI Mossel Bay were alerted by TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority) Port Control, Mossel Bay Harbour, to prepare for the medical evacuation of a 47 year old Filipino male seafarer suffering a medical condition from a motor vessel bulk carrier.
At that stage the motor vessel was approximately 50 nautical miles from Mossel Bay.

While responding to the scene it was confirmed that 2 females had been rescued from the water by Good Samaritans, on a local fishing boat, with a member of Langebaan Yacht Club, and by a Good Samaritan on a canoe.

At 07h23, Friday, 10 October, our NSRI Durban duty controller and NSRI Durban duty crew were alerted to prepare for a medical evacuation operation expected to take place in the early hours of Saturday morning, for a 26 year old Indian male seafarer, suffering a medical complaint on an oil tanker motor vessel, approaching Durban from deep sea.

🎬 Training Day Highlights!

An action-packed day at Station 37 with a great turnout of crew and trainees 🚤💪
We were joined by Station 21 – St Francis Bay and their Class II vessel for a full day of teamwork, learning, and honing our sea rescue skills 🌊

From Modules 1 to 6, every moment was about improving, supporting one another, and keeping sharp for when it matters most.

NSRI – STATION 37, Jeffreys Bay

NSRI – Jeffreys Bay – Friday, 10 October. Boat with mechanical motor failure assisted:

Tristan Pillay, NSRI Jeffreys Bay duty coxswain, said:

At 14h45, Tuesday, 7 October, NSRI Jeffreys Bay duty crew were activated following a request for assistance for a local boat suffering motor mechanical failure offshore at Lower Point, Jeffreys Bay, with 2 crew onboard, during a local surfing competition.

Our NSRI JetRIB rescue craft was launched and on arrival on the scene we found the 2 crew onboard, a local male and a local female, on the casualty boat safe but adrift with their boat experiencing motor mechanical failure.

A towline was rigged and without incident we towed their boat to shore safely where we assisted to recover their boat and no further assistance was required.

During the Spring high tide it appears that the 10 year old child was sitting on rocks with his brother, age 13, their dad was nearby (they are from Gugulethu, Cape Town), when waves unexpectedly and suddenly swept the 10 year old boy off the rocks into the water. His brother was able to escape from the waves to safety.

Sunday Training Update ⚓🚤

Today’s session was all about building skills on land and at sea!
We kicked off with theory on towline setup and key terminology before launching Rescue 37 and 37 Alpha. Crews and trainees split into two groups, one heading out to sea for practical skills, while the other stayed on land to sharpen ropework, terminology, and throw bag drills. After a successful round, we switched it up so everyone got both land and sea time.
