There is a relationship between oral language and literacy. Oral language can easily influence reading and writing.

Many children with Dyslexia have challenges with the phonological component of language:
1. Phonological awareness (awareness of the sounds of the language)
2. Phonological memory (pronunciation of letter names)
3. Phonological retrieval (word and name retrieval)
4. Phonological production (pronunciation of phonologically complex words)

Does your little one struggle with any of these components?

Joint Attention:
This is the ability to share a common focus on something with someone else. You need to gain, maintain and shift attention. This aids us in communicating and develops social skills.

Early joint attention skills:
• Reaching to be picked up.
• Pointing to a toy.
• Looking at the same page in a book.

Later joint attention skills:
• Focusing on a game.
• Playing make believe.
• Requesting favourite food.

Help your little ones learn to try new foods:
1: Eat the same food alongside them. Kids learn through watching and imitation. For some, even just watching (and smelling) someone else eating a food can be difficult so be a role model.
2: Model interactions with new foods in a fun and achievable way. If your little one isn’t willing to touch wet foods (like fruit), then model smelling and touching it (with a utensil, another food or a full hand). If your little one will lick the fruit, then model biting it to break it up.
3: Use language without pressure. Avoid telling your little one what to do and focus your language on what you’re doing instead. If it sounds or looks enticing, it may convince them to try it for themselves. You want them to try when they are ready and not because you are telling them to do it. You can also speak in the hypothetical (e.g.: I wonder which food with crunch the loudest? I wonder if I can balance this circle on my tongue?)

Thanks to for the reminder that we don’t want passive feeders. Yes you may be getting the food in, but they are not learning skills needed for successful eating.
