So I was blessed with not 1 but 2 finger suckers 😩. I didn’t mind it so much when they were babies as I realised it had a soothing and calming effect for each of them. I secretly hoped they would just outgrow it. Didn’t happen 😏. Last year when I realised that Tory had a strong lisp as a result of finger sucking, I knew I had to do something but I just didn’t know what to do. Secondly, at her 3.5 check the dentist had noted that it was starting to change the order and arrangement of her teeth from the jawline.
So I decided to try Mavala Stop and guys this worked for us in less than a week 🎉! The reason why I think it worked as well is because she was old enough to understand that she shouldn’t suck her finger but just needed a constant reminder whenever she forgot and slipped it back into her mouth. You apply it like nail polish and it has a bitter taste. Whenever she tried to put her finger in her mouth, the bitter taste would immediately act as a reminder to stop and she would then take it out. After a few days we noticed she wasn’t even trying anymore. Win 💃🏾!
When we first applied it on Tory, we also applied on little brother Ibo (our 2nd ex finger sucker 😄) who was 2 1/2 at the time. With him, we couldn’t really explain and get him to understand why he shouldn’t suck his finger so I noticed that even after applying it, he kept attempting to suck his finger every 5minutes (as was his habit) and he got really upset when he tasted the Mavala stop on his nails.
In that first hour after we applied it, he threw up twice because of the taste. Wasn’t the plan 🤦🏾♀️. After the second time I decided he was too young to understand like his sister so we decided to take it off. However miraculously, even after we took it off, I think he was just so put off by the taste of his finger in that one hour he had it on that he has never attempted to suck his finger again since that time 😅.
