Freedom in Balance Wellness Centre Team of HPCSA registered psychologists.

My Approach and Values:

I am a registered Counselling Psychologist and Psychometrist, passionate about developing the field of psychology and I strive to bring positive change to South Africa within the mental health sector by enabling and inspiring children, adolescents, families, adults and communities to create more meaningful and fulfilling lives. I utilise an integrative approach to psychoth

erapy, working primarily from an interpersonal therapy model and incorporating cognitive behavioural and narrative techniques where necessary. I currently assist individuals of all ages- & my key areas of interest include assisting children and adults with anxiety; depression; special needs; grief and loss; trauma; and career development and guidance. I have extensive experience in the field of career counselling, firmly believing that the central goal of career counselling has shifted from choosing an occupation or charting a career path to championing a meaningful work life that matters to the person and to society. The complexities of 21st century life require new ways of helping people construct their career stories and navigate the world of work and careers. Therefore, I incorporate contemporary models and methods in a distinctive approach to advance career counselling in the digital age. Key areas of interest:

- Play therapy

Hi everyone!šŸ™Œ

In April we are doing a final intake for our DBT Groups for this year - limited spaces are available & you certainly don’t want to miss this incredible learning opportunity!

So,What is DBT?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence based treatment developed by world renowned psychologist,Marsha Linehan. DBT has shown to be useful as it teaches individuals to accept thoughts, feelings and behaviours- as well as the skills to change them. By learning and applying DBT skills (including emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and mindfulness), one can improve their quality of life, reduce distress, and enhance their relationships. Participants will receive weekly training material and practice DBT skills within a group setting, as well as at home.

We look forward to welcoming you into the group!

Well, lazing around, mostly (no one has granted him permission to sit on this couch) but he is a rule breaker, clearly. Luckily he is cute and lovable. He brings warmth & (demanded) affection to the therapy space šŸ’ 🐶

Thank you,Noah 🐶

Dear Clients,

Thank you for another fulfilling year together.

As you reflect on 2023, please give yourselves permission to have downtime, time to do nothing. Defending your right to such time takes courage, conviction and resiliency. Such time, space and quiet will strike our family and friends as a withdrawal from them. It is! Withdrawal is necessary though- especially during the festive season.

Embrace creative solitude; you require the healing of time alone. Without this period of recharging, you are basically on a treadmill of virtuous production and you are caught in a virtue trap. By this I mean that we may consider others before ourselves. This is the season of giving but let’s challenge ourselves to say yes to ourselves a little more!

Here is a little ā€˜virtue-trap quiz’ to help you determine whether your life is serving YOU or only others, taken from Julia Cameron’s ā€˜The Artist’s Way’ (a worthwhile read):

1. The biggest lack in my life is…
2. The greatest joy in my life is…
3. My largest time commitment is…
4. As I play more,I work…
5. I feel guilty that I am…
6. I worry that…
7. If my dreams come true, my family will…
8. I sabotage myself so people will…
9. If I let myself feel it…
10. One reason I get sad sometimes is…

Then, list 10 things you’d love to do but don’t allow yourself to do. So often, the mere act of writing out your forbidden joys breaks down the barriers to doing them! Put this list somewhere visible 😁

Let’s embrace our gift of creativity this festive season and avoid the virtue trap as much as possible. šŸŽ„

World Alzheimer’s Day is coming up soon…

And this means that September marks the month where we collaborate in an attempt to raise awareness and challenge the stigma around dementia. and will be sharing invaluable information this week- keep your eyes peeled šŸ‘€

According to research, the number of people living with dementia is set to almost triple by 2050, making it a critical healthcare challenge. As we await further developments and the possibility of finding a cure (which remains an ongoing and arduous effort)- risk reduction plays a particularly significant role.

I work at various retirement villages across Johannesburg with a number of clients with Alzheimer’s - and I can say for sure that it is pivotal to take proactive steps to reduce risk factors, thereby increasing chances of maintaining brain health for as long as possible. Follow us this week as we share information aimed at challenging the stigma around dementia and promoting a better understanding of the disease. Together, we can work towards reducing the impact of dementia on individuals, families and global society. šŸ’”

Today is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy World Awareness Day!

Mina Sean du Plessis has inspired me to continue raising awareness in SA and internationally: I conducted my masters thesis on this- exploring the lived experiences of parents raising a child with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy- and she was one of my participants. She continues to support so many families in a similar predicament and I’ve learnt a great deal from her over the years and we’ve continued to collaborate to assist families with a much needed support system throughout this journey.

I’ve copied and pasted her post below (with her consent of course) as her continued efforts to assist others in such a selfless way has truly made a difference in many many lives. If you, or anyone you know is raising a child with DMD,please reach out to Mina or myself for support or any guidance. This can be such an isolating journey otherwise. Thank you, , for all the valuable work you’re doing ā¤ļø

Mina’s post:
Today is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy world awareness day and its something that is super close to my heart! Duchenne is a terminal muscle wasting condition that mainly affects boys. This sweety pie face is my own little hero that is fighting this condition and he is also the reason how and why moimoi’s started. Today I would love to create awareness for Duchenne because there are still so many little boys only being diagnosed at a later age when the condition has already progressed quite a bit and it has a huge impact on their quality of life. I have a support group for Duchenne in South Africa, so if you ever hear of a family affected by it or suspect it, please reach out to me (0765459292) so that we can help them and get the right information to them as quickly as possible.
