Did you know that a 3-year old (top left image) and a 6-year old (top right image) have significantly different skeletal structure in their hands?! Notice the bones in the wrist of the 3-year old -- many of them are still mostly cartilage! Look at all the spaces in between the bones where muscles and tendons will change through the years. Even the difference between a 6-year old and a 14-year old (lower right) is huge!

Preschoolers have SO much development to do before they can write the way school-aged children or adults can!

Please do NOT stress if your preschooler does not want to write or draw. Some love it and some don't.

While they are growing, strengthen those little bones and muscles! Here are some great pre-writing, muscle-strengthening activities:

* painting, drawing, coloring
* playdough
* tearing and cutting
* gluing
* poking holes in things (try toothpicks and paper!)
* digging in dirt
* building with LEGOS, marble runs, or other blocks
* beading (try beads, cut straws, or even bobbins!)
* puzzles
* squeezing (try stress balls, squeezing water in a sponge, or using a pipette)
* picking up and throwing balls (use different sizes!)
* playing with toys (watch what their little fingers do when they pick up and move little cars, marbles, action figures, etc!)
These all strengthen and help develop little hands, muscles, and bones. When they are physically ready to write, it will be so much easier than if they were pushed when they didn't want to and weren't ready!

Magic painting was a hit in our household this morning! Fun, easy activity that guarantees a beautiful end product.

You need white paper and a white wax crayon for this activity. Draw on the white paper with the wax crayon and then use water colours or food colouring when painting to reveal the drawings.

We are going to use the painted paper for birthday/even cards and gift wrapping.

It’s gift giving season! Often it’s a nice gesture to give teachers, assistants, tutors and therapists thank you gifts at the end of a busy and successful year. For those who celebrate Christmas, it’s time to start preparing! Personalised Gift Wrap is a lovely way to put your own stamp on things. It’s super simple to do…food colouring and paper, with stamps, brushes, utensils (forks make interesting patterns) to apply the food colouring to paper. Give it a try and let me know how it turns out….

Play is the most important occupation that a child engages in. Children learn the most through play and play is a fun, engaging way that children make sense of their world. Protect your child’s childhood by doing your best to avoid over scheduling and over structuring their time for them.

What a great depiction of how we should approach a difficult situation with our little ones. It’s not always easy to be the calm in the chaos, but it is always better to try and not add to the chaos.

A few tips that help me deal with my little ones are:

• Take a deep breath (or a few deep breaths), and focus on breathing out. This helps to lower your heart rate and calms your nervous system.

• Acknowledge their feelings (and your own) in the situation by naming the emotion you are seeing behind the behavior. “Wow, you are so frustrated when things don’t go as you planned. I get frustrated sometimes too” or “I can imagine how angry that makes you feel”.

• Try avoid negotiating or explaining in the chaotic moment. Your little one is not able to manage this as their “thinking brain” has been unplugged. When your little one has managed to calm down and become regulated, then this kind of conversation can happen.

By observing how you, as the adult, deal with a situation, your child is able to learn a coping strategy for when they are faced with a difficult situation in the future.

We don’t always get it right, but just keep trying.

The girls were busy bees this morning. They built 8 puzzles before we left for school this morning! 🤓 Puzzle building is a good activity to develop visual skills but it also helps to develop problem solving which is used in mathematics and other subjects later on! Physically doing the puzzle helps to develop fine motor skills, where precise movements are needed to shift a piece into place. These skills will be used when accuracy is needed in writing and drawing. Building puzzles requires patience and attention, which are great emotional skills to develop.
