It's head injury awareness month! Its estimated 89 000 south africans suffer from a head injury every year. These individuals are left with varing levels of disabilities.

In group today we made pencil holders.

Why, you ask? Other than working on fine motor skills we worked on motivation, creativity, visual skills, concentration, problem solving and planning. We had to work as a team to help each other complete the tasks. Best of all, we had fun doing it.

We try to make items that Headway Gauteng can use in one way or another. Or that we can donate to others in need (toys for under privilagged children ect). This allows the attendees an opportunity to contribute to their communities.

*Side note. The movie 'Inside out' is a well written movie, that provides some insight into how the brain works. A must watch.

Haley Qualified from the University of the Free State in 1997. She works in the field of Adult Physical & Neurorehabilitation and is a specialist in Fitness to Drive Assessments & rehabilitation. She is passionate about working with the elderly, training and offering courses that will serve the greater OT community. Haley also served as the chairperson of the coding committee of OTASA for 17 years.

Teamwork definitely is the dream work. I have absolutely loved watching how this group has taken the idea of reusing so called "rubbish", to create toys, and usable object for themselves and others.

Headway is an amazing organization, that is funded by donations, that has helped multiple people and families who are living with acquired brain injuries.
I am currently one of the therapist running groups at headway. One of our current projects is making toys from recycled/reused resources for others in the community who may need something extra. The group really enjoy being able to contribute to others.
I am so fortunate to be able to spend several hours a week laughing and learning with this amazing group of people.

Our patio is a very special space at Headway Gauteng - it is where members, families, volunteers, therapists, student interns, and staff, all come together and bond over the smell of fresh coffee and where endless warmth is not just from the urn
