What a character! Privileged to be part of your journey.

An update from Mia’s mom:
“Today is global Childhood Cancer awareness day. On the 14th of Feb 2020 Mia was discharged from hospital which marked the end of her first phase of treatment.

Today two years later, it feels a little unreal that so much time has passed already. We are still in remission and thank our heavenly father everyday for all the precious moments we still have together. We are also immensely thankful to have such a dedicated medical team as well as all the beautiful people who still keep our family in their prayers.

I dont think I’ll ever have enough words to express how proud I am of our little warrior.”

Little Emily needs a donor - could you be the match?

Meet Emily - Our warrior princess.

She is suffering from a rare form of leukaemia called JMML and has been through so much in her 4 months on earth.

She is a fighter and always has a smile or a giggle to give.

The only treatment is a bone marrow donor. Chemo is not an option.

There are many children, teens, adults fighting leukaemia, requiring a transplant.

We’re asking anyone who is willing, to sign up and become a bone marrow donor. Not just for Emily but for everyone else who is waiting on a match.

There are other ways to help, blood or platelet donations.

Or just simply sharing - the more people who know and who become donors the better.

We’ll share various ways to help, give links and information. All we ask is that you share her story - the more people who know, the better.

Wits Paediatric Oncology Group

Public and private paediatric oncology and haematology in Johannesburg.

We believe in a truly collaborative approach and our regular multidisciplinary team meetings ensure that your child receives not just a first and a second opinion, but multiple opinions followed by a consensus decision based on the highest ethical and academic standards. We conduct regular Morbidity and Mortality discussions to audit our own practice, and abide by clinical governance regulations. We are proud to have provided the training ground and foundation for paediatric oncology in Johannesburg.

Although we are made of individuals, our strength lies in the fact that we are able to come together and passionately debate the treatment option for each child, to ensure that each child receives a tailor-made, child-centered treatment plan. We contribute to Continuing Medical Education activities, and network with international experts to achieve up-to-date care. Our team members run clinical trials in oncology for high risk Hodgkin lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, melanoma, high grade glioma, Ewing sarcoma and neuroblastoma and in haematology for haemophilia, sickle cell disease and immune thrombocytopaenia (ITP). In addition, we participate in national trials of treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma, germ cell tumours and neuroblastoma. We are affiliated in many ways with the International Paediatric Oncology Society (SIOP), the Society for Neuro-Oncology Sub-Saharan Africa (SNNOSSA) and various non-profit organisations to help our families access as much support as possible.

We believe in a true team approach – the child and family are central in decision-making and we make decisions with the family, not for the family.
