Let’s Talk About Organ Donation:
Breaking Myths, Saving Lives

We understand—talking about organ donation can feel uncomfortable. In many of our communities, there are beliefs and traditions around keeping the body whole, fears about what happens after we pass, and mistrust of the healthcare system. These are real feelings, shaped by history, culture, and experience.

But here’s the truth: organ donation is an act of Ubuntu — “I am because we are.”
By choosing to be a donor, you are choosing to give life, to help another mother, father, sister, brother, or child live to see another day.

A few important facts:
Your body is treated with the utmost respect during and after donation.
Donation does not affect traditional funeral arrangements.
It is a selfless gift that can save up to 7 lives and improve many more through tissue donation.

Decisions about donation are only made after all life-saving efforts have failed — it is never about giving up on you.

Let’s open the conversation — with our families, elders, faith leaders, and communities — so we can make informed choices.

Organ donation is not about losing something… it’s about giving the most powerful gift anyone can give: the gift of life.

Ubuntu in action: I live because you cared.

Give the Gift of Life: Be an Organ Donor

Each day, hundreds of South Africans face dire circumstances, waiting for someone to say "yes" to organ donation. Today, more than 4,700 people—including children and adults—are on the waiting list for a life-saving organ or cornea transplant in South Africa

Yet, only about 0.2% of South Africans are registered organ donors, a number that speaks volumes about the urgent need for awareness and action

Here’s why registering matters:

One donor can save up to 7 lives, and transform the futures of more than 50 people through tissue donation
pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

South Africa’s deceased donor rate stands at worrying 1.4 donors per million people, placing us among the lowest in the world

Encouragingly, South Africa is the only African country with active deceased donor programs, underscoring our capacity—and responsibility—to lead the way
pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

How you can help:

Register—visit the Organ Donor Foundation at www.odf.org.za or call 0800 22 66 11 to sign up (it only takes a few minutes)

Talk to your family—your organs can’t be donated without their consent, even if you’re registered. Make your wishes known

Share this post—help us spread awareness and encourage others to register and discuss their wishes. Let’s transform awareness into action. Together, we can help make a lifesaving difference.

There are eight common blood types, determined by the ABO and Rh systems.
The ABO system has four types: A, B, AB, and O.
The Rh system adds a positive or negative designation (Rh positive or Rh negative) to each ABO type, resulting in the eight common blood types: A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, and O-.

ABO System:
Type A: Has A antigens on red blood cells and anti-B antibodies in the plasma.
Type B: Has B antigens on red blood cells and anti-A antibodies in the plasma.
Type AB: Has both A and B antigens on red blood cells and no antibodies in the plasma.
Type O: Has no A or B antigens on red blood cells and both anti-A and anti-B antibodies in the plasma.

Rh System:
Rh positive: Indicates the presence of the RhD antigen on red blood cells.
Rh negative: Indicates the absence of the RhD antigen on red blood cells.

Blood Type Compatibility:
Universal donor: Type O negative blood can be transfused to anyone, as it lacks both A, B, and Rh antigens.
Universal recipient: Type AB positive blood can receive blood from anyone, as it has both A and B antigens and is Rh positive.

It's generally safest to match blood types for transfusions, but O negative is often used in emergencies when there's no time to determine the patient's blood
