This photo shows gestational sacs containing developing cells.
Going from smallest to largest, you can see a pregnancy at 5 weeks, 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 8 weeks and finally the largest is 9 weeks. The diameter of the petri dish is approximately 8.5 cm. Early pregnancies are small!

An abortion with pills involves taking medicines that make the uterus contract and expel the pregnancy - the body is an amazing thing! Sometimes we are asked what to do with the products of conception if passing a pregnancy at home. For abortions under 10 weeks, the tissue expelled is very similar to what you would see during menstruation and you can handle it the same way. You can use a pad and dispose of the pad as you normally would.

In 13 US states, abortion is banned even in the earliest stages of pregnancy. But we rarely see what such tissue really looks like

Is a surgical abortion painful?

We use a process call manual vacuum aspiration to provide a surgical abortion (see more on this below). Women’s experience with pain during this process varies widely, with some women feeling almost nothing at all and other women feeling quite uncomfortable. Typically, the procedure takes several minutes, during which most women will feel a moderate amount of cramping. After the procedure has ended, cramping usually decreases rapidly.

Is an abortion with pills painful? What are the side-effects?

Most women will experience pain and cramping during the abortion after using the misoprostol tablets. Most women describe the pain as only a little bit worse than what they experience during a menstrual period.

Some women will experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea, but this can be the effect of early pregnancy as much as it is due to abortion pills. Usually these side effects go away by themselves and do not require medical attention. Headache, mild dizziness, fever and hot flashes are symptoms that also should go away by themselves.

Having an abortion will not usually affect your chances of becoming pregnant and having normal pregnancies in the future. But there's a very small risk to your fertility and future pregnancies if you develop a womb infection during the procedure that's not treated promptly.

At BMM, we offer surgical abortion and medical abortion (also called abortion with pills). We provide information about both methods so that women can choose with method suits them best.

What is an abortion with pills?

An abortion with pills is a non-surgical termination of a pregnancy. The safest, most effective type of medical abortion requires the use of two different pills. These medicines, called mifepristone and misoprostol, provoke the spontaneous expulsion of the pregnancy from the uterus. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which is required to sustain a pregnancy. Without this hormone, the attachment of a fertilized egg to the uterine wall is disrupted, and the uterus contracts. Misoprostol enhances contractions and helps to expel the products of conception from the uterus.

Mifepristone and misoprostol are listed on the Core Model List of Essential Medicines of the World Health Organization.

Medical abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol is highly effective and safe. The effects include cramping and prolonged menstrual-like bleeding. Common side effects are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
