In the case of cancer inside the mouth, a mandibulectomy can be performed as treatment which involves the removal of the lower part of the jaw. There are two types:

- Marginal mandibulectomy: Only the area with cancer is removed. Much of the jawbone is left to try to avoid reconstructive surgery.
- Segmental mandibulectomy: The entire jaw bone is removed and then reconstructed. A bone from another part of your body (leg, back, arm or hip) is used to make a new jaw.

If you suspect mouth cancer, let's catch it in the early stage and hopefully avoid major reconstructive surgery.
To book a consultation, call AOS reception on 087 095 1599.

Continuing with the theme of food, did you know that what you eat affects your facial appearance and breathing patterns? In short, the adoption of a western diet which comprises many processed foods that require less chewing, has led to the weakening of masticatory muscles and shortening of the jaw. The face shape is changed and the tongue may not be able to rest in its optimal position thus leading to a host of problems, including mouth breathing, misaligned teeth and sleep apnea.

Noticing that your jawbone is shrinking? Bone atrophy or osteonecrosis can be caused by missing teeth, gum disease, tooth infection, or even tumors or cysts.

In the case of missing teeth, it's important to understand that the teeth and jawbone work in symbiosis to remain healthy; the jawbone anchors teeth and lends stability for chewing/biting, and in turn, the pressure exerted from these actions stimulates the bone.

When a tooth is lost, the bone in that vicinity can shrink unless the tooth is soon replaced by a dental implant which will mimic the stimulating role of a natural tooth to keep the surrounding bone (and teeth) strong.
NOTE: Wearing dentures cannot prevent jawbone deterioration.

To stop jawbone shrinkage with dental implants, call AOS reception on 087 095 1599 and book a consultation.

"There appears to be a relationship between TMJ disorders and headaches. For example, a 2015 study found that headaches were one of the primary symptoms of these conditions.

However, according to a 2017 studyTrusted Source, the relationship between headaches and TMJ disorders can go both ways. The authors note that a headache may intensify TMJ pain for some individuals, whereas, for others, TMJ pain may cause a headache.

In a 2019 study, researchers found that painful TMJ disorders caused people to experience more frequent headaches. They also found that treating both conditions is the most effective way to reduce the symptoms."

To check the health of your jaw joints and banish related headaches, call AOS reception on 087 095 1599 and book a consultation.

TMJ disorders can cause headaches, and headaches can sometimes cause TMJ pain. Learn about the association between these conditions and the treatment options.
