So why aren’t you celebrating yourself consistently and intentionally?

Because you focus too much on comparing yourself to others which leaves you feeling inferior and unable to see the progress you’ve made. There’s nothing healthy about that. Too much comparison can leave you feeling awful and inferior. You even end up believing there’s nothing wonderful about yourself or your life, your self-esteem also hits a low.

Sometimes our feelings of inferiority when we compare ourselves end up driving us to be overly competitive, and then we lose sight of what’s important and meaningful.

That’s not a great way to live.

The hamster wheel of comparison is never ending. There will always be someone who’s better than you. Stop looking outside of yourself and direct that attention inwards. Rather track your progress based on how far you’ve come, not other people’s track record.

Are you ready to start celebrating yourself consistently and intentionally?

I’ve opened my six months self-celebration programme and would like to invite you to join if, like me, you are type-A overachiever. I will support you as you learn to celebrate yourself and will teach you the following:

-Being more consistent and intentional with celebrating yourself
-Letting go of perfectionism
-Believing you are good enough
-Learning to do less
-Letting go of swinging from one achievement to the next without pausing to pat yourself on the back
-Being comfortable with visibility
-Start learning how your ancestors would like you to celebrate yourself

I got a reminder from Spotify yesterday. I didn't know i’d hit a year with my podcast so I'm gonna celebrate showing up!

My podcast's name is I am Clapping For You and it's about celebrating Africans. I started it because I wasn't having an easy enough time finding consistent good news about black people on the continent and we are generally portrayed in such a terrible way. So I wanted to spread the good news about black people who are doing great things and are inspiring. I mean after all there are sooo many! I'm here to spread the magic!

I haven't published as much as I'd love to but I've met a lot of wonderful people. Some have helped me along the way. And now that I'm a self-celebration coach who helps type A overachievers celebrate themselves, I've noticed that the people I normally find to interview are exactly that so that keeps me learning more about my market.

Anyway, three cheers to me. Well more like 12! That's one to celebrate each month I've had my podcast.

Here's a top three of what I've learned:

-Forget perfection. It doesn't exist. I spent too much time trying to get the perfect episode! Geez I recorded some episodes more than once and have had to accept that I'm pretty much a beginner which means to some extent I will suck.

-Just show up as you are. Sometimes I'd be like "Oh no! I don't like how I sound here! 🥴" But actually that's how I sound sometimes. That's me. I've had to make peace.

-A reminder to be kind to myself. I mean having another podcast I run with a full team, I should have known that running this mostly alone (my VA helps with some things and I have someone doing the sound) will require a lot of work from research to scripting and and. So yeah, I'm doing the best I can.

Anyway, here's to more episodes and more listeners. You can click on the link below to listen to all the episodes so far:

I’m celebrating that I’ve been even more intentional with resting. Especially after experiencing burnout for a few months this year!

I’m reminding myself to not see rest as something that takes me away from achieving my goals.

As much as I love thriving under pressure and feel so proud of myself when I get things done, being an overachiever has for many years taken a toll on my body and mind.

And honestly, intentionally rewiring myself to stop and smell the flowers has had its ups and downs since I started in 2021 with a helpful nudge from my ancestors. It’s been worth it and I’m grateful for the support of the coaches I’ve worked with.

This week I gave myself permission to cut out one activity. Swimming was it. I’ll give it a go next week. I also went for a 90 minute long massage, which was of course good for me. I was also able to sleep more hours (a clear victory because in some weeks, my body only seems to want to sleep for 4-5 hours a night🥴).

So yay me! I even went on a lovely holiday to Dullstroom last month. ❤️

Apart from running my personal podcast named I am Clapping For You, which is about celebrating Africans, I also lead the team running the Tech Talk With Vodacom podcast which is about tech.

I’m here to celebrate that we’ve been selected as a finalist in the prestigious, global Eddie & Ozzie Awards which recognise the best work across many industries. We are in the Best Computer Science or Technology Podcast category.

YAY! 💃🏾

I remember how just over three years ago I pitched the concept of the podcast to my then manager, and three seasons later we are here. I’m very proud of myself and my team!

I have so much respect and great admiration for the people I interview on my podcast, I Am Clapping For You, which is about celebrating Africans. And I love that they are all overachievers and they own it!

In the latest episode, we are celebrating a phenomenal mompreneur named Neo Nare who's a genie coach. That’s a children’s coach if you didn’t know.

Neo also runs a podcast called The GenieCoach Podcast which, as she describes, is about “helping parents preserve and nurture the innocence of a child to allow the child to fully explore their soul mission”.

She is also a nurse, 2x Masters degree graduate, a proud Phd dropout and lecturer at one of the universities in South Africa. She also retired at the age of 34!

Here are some lessons and reminders she shared on this episode:

-The ladder doesn’t exist.
-Make your mark and move.
-Know yourself: she’s a go getter and a starter, and operates according to that.
-Always choose ease.
-Allow the universe to play its part. Do your best. God, the ancestors and the universe will do the rest.
-It does not have to be hard before it gets better. Unsubscribe from the belief that the bigger the struggle, the bigger the reward.
-Your career should ideally work around your lifestyle not vice versa.

I’d like to celebrate how I’ve become better at choosing ease.
I’m now less about wanting to do it all on my own. Allowing myself to be supported was not the easiest thing for me to learn to do but I see how I’ve improved in many areas of my life.

But for now I’m gonna reflect on the distribution aspect of my children’s book, Tumi Goes to the Park, which was published in March of 2017. For a few years it was only available online. It’s been featured on many websites globally and has been translated into a few languages including Japanese and Norwegian.

As the years went by, there was a demand for the hard copy version so I had it printed. The project management just on that was a headache but me being me back then, I was determined to do it all alone. Yikes! So I ran the marketing, took the orders via WhatsApp and other social media platforms, generated invoices, confirmed that payment was received, did the packaging, deliveries, posting and more! 🤯

How tiring! 🥴

It’s sane how I used to do more and more and more so I could achieve my goals at all costs and compromised my health. Typical overachiever type A behaviour.

Anyway, next I build myself an e-commerce website so that my customers could just place orders and pay without needing me to be involved. Then I found a courier company to come to my place to collect orders.

Sure this reduced my work load but it still sucked because booking deliveries for the courier company and doing the packaging myself was not it. 👎🏾

So I decided to explore because I wanted to do less. The onboarding process was too much for me but the day-to-day work does not involve me which is great meaning I don’t have to do much.

Yay, me! 💃🏾

And this is a big deal to me because sweartogod I have some kind of vow of hard work which I’m working through. I’m continuing to accept that it’s okay to do less and have ease. And have support.

It’s made me appreciate that my second book, The Book of Proverb, which I co-wrote with does not require any involvement from me for distribution.

You can order it on Takealot too.

So why aren’t you celebrating yourself intentionally and consistently?

Because you don’t have a sense of being enough as a person.

And you always think you should have done more, no matter what.

You also believe that nothing is ever good enough for you because what drives you to achieve your accomplishments is your sense of feeling inadequate.

And you are always busy. Forever in ‘go’ mode because you thrive under pressure and have a to do list that’s longer than your arm. How typically type A!

When are you gonna stop to celebrate all that you’ve done?

When are you ever gonna stop to see yourself?

It’s time to start doing some unlearning.

With the help of my ancestors, I’ve created the 7 Day Challenge To Celebrate Yourself to help you celebrate celebrate yourself intentionally and consistently.

Today’s a great day to celebrate all your progress. It’s okay to celebrate yourself now while you work towards your goal/s. There’s no need to wait until completion.

You are enough.

In the latest episode of my podcast, 'I am Clapping For You' which is about celebrating Africans, join me as I celebrate Neo Nare who's a podcaster, mompreneur, The GenieCoach (that's a children's coach if you didn't know), nurse, 2x Masters degree graduate, a proud Phd dropout and lecturer at one of the universities in South Africa.

Some of the things that stood out for me about her is she is a master manifester, self-starter and is building the life of her dreams.

She's had an explosive career as a nurse and even managed to retire at the age of 34! Neo also gives herself the space to evolve and I love how she owns up to the great things she has done as an overachiever.

One of the things I love but couldn’t really do much of for a while when I took a break to rest was reading.

I’m here to celebrate being baaacckk!

I’m currently reading The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, which is definitely a hard read. Ma’am wasn’t writing to impress and I get that. Her book will always be necessary and important.

I also got to finish reading my copy of K. Sello Duiker’s Thirteen Cents, which was another tough read. And it hit differently when I read it again as an adult.

I’m going to make an effort to focus more on audiobooks for the rest of the year. Seeing as I’m a bit behind with my reading goal, audiobooks will help me get 40 books by the end of this year faster.

What are you celebrating today?

Celebrating yourself doesn’t mean your life is perfect. It certainly adds a lot of cheerfulness and gives you more to look forward to.

Oh, and the confidence! As an overachiever, it has certainly helped me to slow down and smell the roses while achieving. This has added to me living less of a go, go, go life where I am running on fumes. I love this for me, and for you too.

Today I’d like to celebrate having the loveliest day at Naledi Farm. Neo Nare The GenieCoach (that’s a children’s coach), booked me to read my children’s book ‘Tumi Goes to the Park’ to the (those are children) who were attending her event and I also did a activity with them where we created a book. They named it ‘The boring tale in the boring forest’ (swipe to see the cover) 😂❤️ and it was a collaboration between 8 . And oh what a wild tale they came up with! I’m still chuckling.

The genies also made their own pizza from scratch. I even overheard one of them tell the other, “Use your girl power to knead the dough”😂! We also got to braai some marshmallows which has surprisingly become something I enjoy. ❤️

Play time was fun too. We got to play on the swings and slide, which was great because just like Tumi, the main character in my book, it felt like we’d gone to the park too.

If you’d like to book me to come read at your child’s event (or maybe you work with children?), you can DM me.

My book ‘Tumi Goes to the Park’ is now available on Takealot, if you’d like to place an order.

I’m a winter baby who’s just about had it with winter! And while I can’t summon spring to get here now, because seasons are meant to last as long as they should (both in nature and our lives), I thought let me get some spring inspiration on my nails in the meantime.

Bless my nail tech and her talent. I’m just gonna spend the next few weeks daydreaming about days becoming longer and warmer, flowers blooming, wearing dresses, doing fun outside activities and much more!

Doing my nails is a form of celebration. It’s a pat on the back for showing up for myself. I always look forward to it. I’m also celebrating that this year I booked all my mani and pedi appointments for the whole year which has been wonderfully organised and has given me a peace of mind. I’m definitely doing this every year.

I'd like to celebrate that Neo Nare who’s a genie coach (that’s a children’s coach if you didn’t know, and now she’s also coaching parents) had booked me to read my children’s book ‘Tumi Goes to the Park’ last week Saturday at her monthly children’s event. The theme this time was baking and we were fully kitted out in a chef’s hat and apron. How cute!

I had so much fun with the children. After reading to them, we did more storytelling and they came up with the craziest plots ever😂!

We also made our own donuts from scratch. I love how mine looked like before I gobbled it up. Yum! And we also braaied some marshmallows. I even got a cute certificate at the end.

If you’d like to book me to come read at a children’s event, for a fee of course, you can DM me.

This morning I discovered that Takealot has finally listed my children’s book ‘Tumi Goes to the Park’. To order a copy for your little one/s, you can go on their website, app or just click the link below. They can deliver the next day.

Heeey! 👋🏽

So where have I been?

Sleeping and resting.

A lot!

Life sent me on a lull and I could not fight it.

(And thank God I gave up on that. I’m doing a better job of picking my battles.)

At first it was hard because I had things to do 🙄 and hate being slowed down or disturbed by anything. I even got annoyed because how dare my system do that to me🥴?

I mostly show up for work and school.

Heck, I couldn’t even show up for most of my hobbies. And in this case, I grew to be okay with being inconsistent because it’s not like my Sleeping Beauty era was a forever situation.

So I’m here to celebrate the fact that I surrendered to sleep and rest. It wasn’t the easiest thing to do with my type A personality since I’m generally operating in go, go, go mode!

The wonderful thing is nothing fell apart. My life continued while I slept and rested more. I achieved more things and reminded myself that even when I’m doing very little, I’m still doing a lot.

I’m looking forward to doing even less.

Hmm…I think I’m gonna buy my favourite magazine which is British Vogue and read it as a celebration since I haven’t bought a copy in a while.

What are you celebrating?

My 7 Day Challenge To Celebrate Yourself is available in the link below if you’d like to become more consistent and intentional with celebrating yourself. Try it out and let me know your thoughts.

Happy June! Hello, birthday month!

May was a challenge. I spent most of the month sick. If it wasn’t that, I was exhausted! I thought I’d made a lot of progress with resting more but I see how I still have a long way to go since I’ve been in go mode since November. Things have been intense.

But I am still celebrating.

As much as I had a long list of things I wanted to achieve in May, I had to press pause. I accepted I was sick and rested. This means I did not do a lot of what I expected to, but I was present and embraced my limitations. Tjo it was challenging because I’m serious about my to-do list and I’m a girl on the run. I’m just here to smash my KPIs, okay?

It feels like I slept my life away but I see that I still got a lot done. For instance, I recorded episode three of my podcast, I am Clapping For You, sent copies of my children’s book, Tumi Goes to the Park, to Takealot and two podcast interviews I did on other impressive podcasts were published. I have another one set for June so this is on my list of things to celebrate. Sadly, I didn’t get to read as much as I would have liked but I am certain I’ll finish 40 books by the end of this year.

Life happens. Not having the capacity to celebrate yourself doesn’t mean you should not ever celebrate. June is my birthday month and I feel a lot better than I did in May so I will be celebrating what I mentioned here and more. Can’t wait.

So why aren’t you celebrating yourself intentionally and consistently?

The typical overachiever thing is to see anything as worthy of celebrating once you’ve achieved it.

Do you know it’s okay to celebrate in the lead up to achieving something?

No, please don’t tell me you won’t celebrate something before you get it because you believe you will jinx it. That’s not it. You aren’t in control of everything. PS: Stop being scared of failure. It’s part of life!

Celebrating the small wins in the lead up to the big one brings you doses of happiness. This is me telling you that you don’t have to achieve your goals to be happy. Find happiness on the way with the smalls wins.

Your smalls wins keep you motivated and make you feel accomplished. That’s part of why they are important. Like they say, it’s the little things.

So here’s one of the things to do to become more intentional with celebrating yourself intentionally and consistently: Take your big goal and break it down into different parts that need to be executed. Next to each part, write down what you will do to celebrate. You can go as big or small with your celebration, it’s all up to you. I don’t care if you even decide to go bunjee jumping, or do something as ridiculous as stuffing your face with your favourite sweets. What matters more is that you actually celebrate.

Let me know what you are planning to achieve, how you’ve broken it down as well as what the planned celebration will be at the end of each part. Feel free to DM me or comment down below.

I’m just gonna celebrate choosing to be less critical of myself as I work on more content for my podcast.

If anything, running “I am Clapping For You” has given me a lot of stage fright. I hate to admit it but I am a recovering perfectionist. Yes, I know, perfection doesn’t exist. And that is what I tell all the other perfectionists around me but sometimes I don’t take my own advice.

The first time I listened to a podcast was around 11 years ago. I was bored out of my mind on a long-haul flight and came across “Here’s the thing” by Alec Baldwin in the in-flight entertainment and I’ve been hooked since. And of course, being a podcast ju**ie means I’ve listened to many podcasts over the years, good ones, middle-of-the-road ones and bad ones. I’ve also had the lovely pleasure of launching a podcast with my team at my 9-to-5. It’s been running for nearly three years. We are on season three and I couldn’t be prouder.

Running my own podcast is whole different ball game. It’s more challenging. Sure, I have assistance and support, but yhoooo! It’s that damn stage fright again! I have to say though, I’m getting better at moving past it and judging myself less. I’m giving myself a break by forgiving myself every time I make mistakes. Especially the glaring ones like forgetting to close my WhatsApp tab while recording the other day and realising just how loud the song my washing machine sings at the end of a cycle is. Yikes! I’m so sorry, dear listener 😘. I will do better.

I’m also taking a shorter time to listen back to each recording and am less mortified when I hear my voice. 😂

Anyway, my next episode should be out next week and I felt more relaxed recording it so that’s a win!

Here’s what I’m celebrating today!

A few weeks ago, I was excited to join Shirley Hubbard on the Shades of Strong podcast, which is one of my favourite American podcasts, as we talked about my journey to celebrating myself, healing from ancestral trauma and a few other things as well.

Launching my 7-Day Challenge To Celebrate Yourself has truly connected me with a lot of wonderful people across the globe and I’m looking forward to sharing more interviews with you as I go along.

I haven’t decided how I’m gonna celebrate this interview but celebrate I will! I really had a good time talking to Shirley and I hope you enjoy our interview.
