Jordan Du Toit

Jordan Du Toit Welcome! It’s lovely to have you here. I'm Jordan, a clinical psychologist based in Melville, JHB 🌻 Being human is a challenge for us all.

The journey of life is one of survival, joy, and intense moments of struggle. From those with more severe mental health challenges to those simply wanting to know the workings of their minds more intimately, psychotherapy is an incredible tool to facilitate your own healing and coping with life’s challenges. Part of the joy of therapy is that you and your therapist form an honest and trusting relationship where you can be heard without judgment in a safe space. Many of us carry far too many struggles alone and a safe space can be all you need to overcome some of what you have been carrying alone. Starting therapy can be an anxiety-provoking journey but I hope you can make the jump to finding a space together to allow you the space to grow and heal. I work in a psychodynamic way, which means I focus on patterns in your life, how they may have come about, and how knowing more about them can help you to become aware and either accept these parts of yourself or become energised to find new ways of interacting with the world and yourself. You deserve to choose to work on yourself to find fulfillment and healing.

I filmed this last week, but posting it now seems even more fitting. GBV and femicide have been declared a National Disaster. Thank you, 💜

“Can AI act as my therapist?” This question has surfaced just about everywhere, and it’s obvious why people are curious.

With long therapy waiting lists and costs being what they are, AI seems like an easy solution. It’s there 24/7, judging no one and it doesn’t cost a thing. The appeal is understandable.

But, research shows some concerning insights:
⚠️ AI can’t recognise suic*dal intent
⚠️ No medical or clinical training
⚠️ Validates dangerous thinking
⚠️ No confidentiality

AI offers comfort and validation, which does feel good. But, therapy provides growth and challenges; which feels hard but it lasts. AI and mental health professionals have their place, but we serve very different purposes.

If you’re considering AI for mental health support, think of it like a supportive chat - potentially soothing, but not equipped for the complexities of real therapeutic work.

You’re worthy of genuine connection and real support 💚

Exam stress isn’t a personal flaw — it’s a nervous system responding to pressure. 📚 For many students, the hard part isn’t the content… it’s holding the emotional weight of it.

In this video, I’m sharing a few ways to move through exam season with a steadier mind and body. 🧠

No toxic positivity, no “just calm down.” Just grounded tools: rhythm, structure, spaciousness, noticing what’s happening inside you, and making room for it without shame.

Stress is information. It tells us what matters, where the stakes feel high, and what support we may need.

You can care deeply about the outcome and care for yourself in the process. 🤝 Both get you further.

Save for when things feel loud. 🔖

Therapy isn’t just about your feelings — it’s about your therapist’s, too. Countertransference happens when your therapist’s emotional responses towards you become part of the process.

When managed well, it can be a powerful tool:
✨ Frustration might mirror how others experience you
✨ Protectiveness may point to unmet needs from childhood
✨ Surprise can reveal unspoken emotional cues

Good therapists:
✅ Notice and reflect on their responses
✅ Separate what’s theirs from what’s yours
✅ Use those insights to deepen the work
✅ Keep boundaries intact while staying human

But when countertransference isn’t managed, it can complicate things: oversharing, avoiding hard topics, extending sessions unnecessarily, or taking on too much responsibility for your progress.

That’s why therapists have supervision and often see their own therapists. It helps them stay grounded, keeping their humanity as a guide, not a distraction.

Transference happens when your unconscious mind projects old relationship patterns onto your therapist, replaying past dynamics in the present.

It can feel intense: longing, anger, frustration, even love. A raised eyebrow might remind you of a critical parent. Your therapist’s warmth might stir feelings you’ve missed since childhood. These emotions aren’t random, though, they’re clues about where your history still lives inside you. 🌿

Transference can be helpful when it highlights patterns you’re ready to work through. But it isn’t always easy. Sometimes, these projections create confusion, conflict, or even dependency if they aren’t explored openly in therapy.

When handled with care, though, transference becomes an opportunity. It helps you understand why some relationships feel charged, why you seek validation the way you do, and how early wounds quietly shape present dynamics.

Your unconscious is saying: “This is where I’m stuck. Let’s work here.” And therapy offers a safe space to notice those patterns, hold them gently, and begin untangling them.

Big feelings aren’t wrong — but they do need attention. ✨

AI isn’t just reshaping technology, it’s changing the way we think. 🧠 NHS doctors are reporting cases where people are developing “ChatGPT psychosis” after marathon late-night conversations with chatbots.

From messianic complexes to believing AI is sending divine messages, the psychological impact is real. Here’s why: chatbots are designed to agree with you. They validate your thoughts, amplify your emotions, and build an “echo chamber of one” where even the most distorted ideas start to feel true.

Recent reports include:
✨Users convinced they’ve uncovered “hidden truths” about reality
✨People abandoning sleep to pursue AI-driven “missions”
✨Chat sessions spiralling into grand conspiracy thinking

Those most at risk? People already carrying stress, loneliness, or existing mental health challenges. And here’s the scary part: AI doesn’t know when conversations turn harmful — it just keeps reflecting your beliefs back to you.

This isn’t about occasional use. It’s about the 3am deep dives, the desperate searches for connection, and the illusion of “being understood.” We’re facing something new: technology so persuasive it can rewrite your sense of self.

For so many trans kids in South Africa, school isn’t just about maths tests and assemblies, it’s about survival.

But, when schools actually show up for trans learners, things change fast. In the Western Cape, more than 60 schools have supported students through social transition, and when staff follow the right steps, bullying just… stops. Zero cases. That’s huge.

Still, most trans youth in South Africa face bullying at school, and we’ve lost young lives because adults didn’t step in.

It isn’t rocket science. Safe schools happen when policies are clear, teachers are trained, and compassion is non-negotiable. When we get this right, everyone wins. When we don’t, the cost is far too high. 🚦

Safety should be the standard, not the exception. Every learner deserves to feel that sigh of relief. 💙🏳️‍⚧️📚

There’s no checklist for being trans. No “right” way to look, no steps you have to tick off. 🌱🌈 Your identity is yours—whether you’re accessing hormones, changing your name, or just quietly figuring things out.

Right now, South Africa is home to around 181,000 trans people, but only a tiny fraction—about 5%—can get gender-affirming healthcare through the public system. And if you’re a young person of colour? The barriers are even higher.

But here’s what matters: this year, South African healthcare leaders came together to say it out loud—everyone has the right to self-determine their gender, identity, and expression. No gatekeeping. No hoops to jump through. The latest guidelines back this up, putting your agency and autonomy front and centre.

Of course, it’s not all smooth sailing. This year’s USAID funding cuts meant several clinics in big cities had to close their doors, leaving thousands without care. But even in tough times, PATHSA and so many others keep pushing for care that’s evidence-based and actually listens to trans and gender-diverse young people.

If anyone tries to question your identity, remember: you are the expert on your own life. Your story is yours to write, and every version is real. 🤝✨

“Let’s take more time” can sound gentle, but for many trans people, waiting means more distress. ⏳

A recent study at Red Cross Children’s Hospital found that half of transgender children without support will attempt su*cide, while 90% of those who identify as transgender during puberty continue to do so long-term.

Dr Simon Pickstone-Taylor, who leads the country’s only public youth gender clinic, now sees over three new referrals each week—a huge leap from just two patients a year a decade ago. Meanwhile, the public waiting list for gender-affirming surgery has grown to over 300, with some waiting more than 20 years.

Not all “wait and see” pauses are protective.

Some are just another way to say “not yet” when what’s needed is “yes.”

Misinformation about gender affirming care isn't always loud or obvious. Sometimes it hides behind "concern" or "just asking questions." 🧐

If you notice dramatic words like "mutilation" or "irreversible," pause for a moment. These terms are designed to provoke, not inform.

In August 2024, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) issued an advisory warning practitioners about off-label drug use for gender dysphoria, emphasising that treatments need to be done with care, consent and based on scientific evidence.

Meanwhile, the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society published comprehensive gender-affirming healthcare guidelines in 2021, which are supported by evidence and aligned with international best practices.

If a claim feels designed to scare you, it's worth checking what actual experts are saying. 🔍

Stay curious, not fearful. Facts matter more than headlines.
