Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) affects the central part of the retina (nerve layer behind the eye) 👀 and is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people over 50. It doesn’t cause complete blindness, as only central vision is affected.
AMD often runs in families, with genetics playing a key role 🧬.
It’s recommended that all adults get a comprehensive eye exam by age 40, especially if there’s a family history of diseases like diabetes, heart conditions, or macular degeneration 👩⚕️.
Risk factors for AMD include smoking 🚬, poor diet (high in fast food 🍔, sugar 🍩, and refined starches 🍞), lack of brightly colored foods 🥕🥬 and Omega-3-rich fish 🐟, as well as conditions like hypertension 💔, high cholesterol 🫀, diabetes, and heart disease ❤️.
