School readiness assessment

This assessment is usually conducted when a child is in Grade R to look at their strengths and areas of development. The purpose of this assessment is for early detection of any learning and developmental barriers that might negatively influence your child s' performance and or adjustment in a school context.

The school readiness assessment looks at five domains of development which are:

1. Physical and motor development and physical health

2.Emotional development

3.Social development

4.Cognitive development

5. Language development

The assessment process is as follows:

1. Intake interview with parent (s)/ caregiver (s) to collect all relevant background information.

2. Assessment of the child.

3. Verbal feedback plus a written comprehensive report with recommendations.

Do you simply want to discover your child 's strengths and weakness so that you can give them all the necessary support they need ? Are you concerned about your child 's development in one of more areas? Is your child exhibiting any emotional distress at pre-school ?

You may want to consider taking your child to an educational psychologist for a school readiness assessment!

What is play therapy ?

We first need to understand that play is an important aspect in communication and overall development of children. Play therapy is a form of therapy that aims at helping children express their emotions, improve their communication and problem solving skills. Play is a natural medium for children to express their feelings and resolve conflicts through play.

Play therapy can help a child deal with the effects of trauma and loss, reduce anxiety and depression, improve children’s behaviour, and help children manage social and academic difficulties.
