The Andries Meyer Old Age Home was birth in 1971 made be a generous donation via an Late Estate of Mr Andries Meyer. After many years and many debating sessions, and with the help and assistance of the Former Mr M Steyn and the then Minister of coloured affairs together with Mr L Van Niekerk and Mr L P Spies, Andries Meyer Old Age Home was established and launched on the 09 August 1980.
At a meeting held in Eldorado Park it was decided that an organization called the Protea Organisation for the Coloured Aged to be established. This body was tasked to erect Old Age Homes in the Transvaal and co-ordinate the process.
Today Andries Meyer Old Age Home -Eldorado Park through the benevolence of the late Andries Meyer has secured a resting place for the Aged, and it has now expanded to become a non racial Home caring for the Aged from all walks of life.
Since their modest beginning with only 15 permanent residence, the centre has developed into a Frail Care Centre with 82 Residence and 48 Staff members consisting of Nursing, Security, Domestic, Office, Drivers & Social Worker Staff Members.
We provided holistic care of between 75 β 82 governments subsided pensioners on the premises, this would include all meals, washing of laundry, physcosocial reports, conducting of recreational activities.
We have a frail care unit that is staffed 24 hours daily and other units for the more mobile and semi-mobile frail elderly that to an extent can still look after themselves. The 24 hour frail care section provides continuous medical and physical care. A Registered nurse is always on duty.
Our bathrooms in the frail section is wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. Handrails in the toilets and bathrooms are installed. Showers areaβs are wide enough and with non -slip floors. The corridors are wide and equipped with handrails. duty during day & night shifts.
We strive to supply well balanced meals and we also cater for certain medical conditions, i.e diabetes. Provisions are made for thee meals, three tea/coffee servings per day, inclusive of vegetables and carbohydrate portions. Fruits are served occasionally.
The organization is subsidised by the Department of Social Development.
We have a residence committee duly elected by the residence whose task it is to be a mouth piece for all residence when they have concerns or issues relating to their wellbeing.
Our Executive Board consisting of a Chairman, Treasurer, Media Liaison, Fundraising and Secretary subscribes to good governance and best practices in all that is done. They are administratively competent and is legally complaint with laws and regulations pertaining to managing the Old Age Home.
